  1. Hi all, I recall before that I downloaded a music video in wmv file format and put it in my Philips DVP642 and it works. But recently I download some movie files in wmv format and play it on my player but it doesnt work... I was wondering how I can make my player to play wmv files? thanks alot for all your help.

Don't think the 642 has (officially) ever handled neither wmv nor wma, and probably never will.
Google for DVP642 and WMV, and you'll find reports of some wmv files working, just like you say, but nothing conclusive what makes some work and some not.

You can't "make it" play the files. If I'm not mistaken, it only plays some of the older (wmv v3 and older?) versions of wmv.

WMV3 = WMV 9. It wouldn't be able to handle that. Possible that it plays WMV1. Definatly the chipset would be able to handle MS MPEG-4 V3, since that is just DivX3. But such files will generally use .asf as an extension (asf = wmv).

Enough people seem to own the player so someone could easily burn a test disc with different wmv/asf files and find out exactly what it supports.

You can download a test cd image at this site to test capabilities of your player. The thing is I think everyone else is right and you're just out of luck. :(

Of course if your system has enough power, just convert the file to an avi that can be played on the 642.

askformore - The DVP-642 does NOT support Windows Media in any format. It makes no claim to do so. I think your recollection is mistaken. There is no way to make this player support Windows Media. It would require a new chip to do that.
