  1. I've got multiple problems with Media Player on my win98se with ATI 7200 video card. Currently have version 9 loaded. When trying to play local .avi, .wav or .mid files, it crashes. MP3's result in C00D1199 errors (Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the player does not support the format...). When trying to access websites with video - news or sports sites (my daughter desperately wanted to watch NCAA basketball over the internet), I can't get the video. At one time I was getting audio but no video but that no longer happens either.

Media Player 6.4 plays the audio and .avi files with no problem. I've tried to reinstall, uninstall and reinstall version 7.1 and shut down my Zonealarm firewall.

I uninstalled Media Player 9, cleaned out registry and unnecessary files with Easycleaner, rebooted and reinstalled Media Player and video card drivers. Rebooted again, but no change to my problem. Note that this was not my original video card. I changed from a Voodoo 3 about a year ago and didn't uninstall the drivers.

Also ran Codec Sniper and found a problem with msyuv.dll. Downloaded it and installed to my windows/system directory. Ran Codec Sniper again and .dll was ok with description: Micorsoft UYVY Video Compessor. Checked my win.ini and find entry vidc.uyvy=msyuv.dll. This did not seem to cure my problem.

I'm not against installing a different video player, but don't know how that will affect viewing streaming video from links within webpages. Most have a window within the webpage for this and use WMP 9.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Take pity on us guys who would tear our hair out, but don't even have enough of that left to do so...

Might I suggest you try GSpot to identify the audio and video codecs you need for specific local files? That little tool will quickly tell you if you've got the correct audio/video codecs installed.

As to streaming video, the same thing applies - if you download the codecs you seem to be missing, you may find that these streaming media files will work properly.

Of course, sometimes you may want to go with another player altogether for streaming files, and even some of the more recent AVI's that are encoded with 5.1 sound.

Believe me, Windoze Media Player 9/10 on WinXP is no picnic either.

Post back and let us know how you make out, ok?

    Cheers!

  3. Tried GSpot. mp3's audio codec shows n.a., .wav's show PCM Audio codec and .avi's show 2 compatible codecs installed.

Not sure how to identify codecs relating to streaming video. Sites I'm interested in are news/sports sites with video window imbedded in webpage.

I can go with another video player, but not sure what will happen when going to the sites i'm interested in.

For webpages that have embedded video windows, make sure you've got the necessary plug-ins, as those are run from your browser.

Typically you'll need some combo of Real Player, QuickTime and Macromedia ShockWave player plug-ins installed to see the bulk of these streaming vids.

    Cheers!

  5. Try this:
    1.Uninstall all videocard drivers.
    2.Install DirectX9.0c.
    5.Install latest videocard drivers.
4.Go to Widows Update and get critical patches.
    5.Run ScanDisc and Defrag.
I highly recommend using Norton Suite with Win98/Me,it fixes alot of problems.

  7. Updated Video Drivers, & DirectX, Ran Norton Utilities: Windoctor and now operating properly.

Tried to install WMPCodecs.exe and had problems...
    "Error Starting Program"
"Setup_wm.exe file is linked to missing export Kernel32.dll:getSystemWindowsdirectoryW."

    WMP Codecs Setup
    Error creating <c:\windows\temp\IXP000.tmp\setup_wkm.exe /quiet/ R:N>
Reason: a device attached to the system is not functioning>

However since everything seems normal otherwise...

    Thanks
