  1. For some reason, I do not have Paint and Calculator in my Windows. All my standard games, like Mindsweep, are gone. So I go to "Add/Remove Windows Components" and select "Accessories and Utilities" I click NEXT and it asks me to insert my Windows SP2 cd.

I do that, and it it looks for a file called "HYPERTRM.DL_" One of my friends told me to look in the I386 folder. I find it and then it looks for a filed called "mswrd8.wpc" This is no where to be located in the cd or on my computer. I tried a complete scan but it doesnt exist. There is no option for me to skip this step. I have to browse and find the file that it needs step by step.

Is there a way I can get my calculator and games back? It shouldnt be this complicated right? I also tried booting the CD from the restart and go into repair mode. The repair mode asks takes me into DOS mode and I get lost on what to type in E:/Windows.

    Can someone help me?

    Thanks!

mswrd8.mpc sounds awfully like a microsoft word file to me.

Please clarify something for me though - you say "get back". Do you mean that you had them but they've disappeared ?

I take it you're using a Windows Install disc and not just the SP2 disc by itself ? or do you have an install disc with SP2 integrated ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Try the following:

Put your CD of XP in the unit. Then go to Start>Run and type "cmd" without quotes. In the new screen, write (always without quotes)

(Mine defaults to C:\documents and settings so I type)

C:\ (press enter) then "X :" where X is = your CD unit.

Then write "cd i386" (space after cd) (press enter).

    "expand calc.ex_ c:\windows\system32\calc.exe" (calculator)
    (space after underscore)

    Always use "expand xxxx.ex_

    Same for "Sol.exe" (Solitare),
    "Freecell.exe"(freecell), "MSHearts.exe" (hearts)
    "Winmine.exe" (minesweeper), "Spider.exe" (spider solitare)

Since these are in your C:\windows\system32 folder, just right click and drag to the start\programs\accessories or
accessories\games\ folder and choose add shortcut.

Hypertrm.dll is for hyperterminal (not much use)

  4. Afterburner,

Thank you. It worked! How did you know all that? Just generally great with computers? How'd you know to place it in the system 32 folder, or does it matter?

Once I move all the "exe" files to my start menu, I try to rename it. I renamed Sol.exe to Solitaire and Spider.exe to Spider.
Calculator, Winmine, and MSHearts have to have the exe extension behind it. When I change the name for those three programs without the exe, it will not run. Why was I able to rename Solitaire and Spider without a problem?

I'm just trying to understand how windows works.
    Thank you very much.

    Jim,
When I said "get back", I meant that I must have accidently deleted them through the "add/remove programs". I dont know why going back to the "add/remove windows components" and add "accessories/utilities" did NOT work for me. I have the windows cd with sp2 integrated.... I think (how do you check?)

Maybe Afterburner can shed some light on why this process didnt work. Repair function through booting off the Windows CD gave me some trouble too. Why is that?

Is it really that important as to why ?

Firstly, it sounds like your windows install is all f**ked up. Secondly, without actually having the machine in front of me to play with, I personally find it almost impossible to diagnose problems with peoples' computers when the owners themselves cannot give you any solid information to go on.

In either case, a reformat/reinstall will cure all ills.
    If in doubt, Google it.
