Restoring AVI Index?

Hello!

I have some important files which I recorded in MPEG but then converted it to AVI for adding logo using virtualdub. But then my computer crashed and I had to reformat my hard disk which included these videos. But then I was able to restore these videos using a program that restores stuff from formatted hard disks. But now the avi files won't play and tell me that it cannot recognize the format. So googling told me that the avi index is corrupted and can be fixed just by removing the zeros before riff avi in hex editor. The files are about 4 GB. I cannot delete the zeros since hex editor would say it can't. What should I do?

You probably tried this, but can VirtualDub open them?

I would work on a copy of the original, just to be on the safe side.
