Hi, I'm trying to backup a region 2 dvd into a region 1. The DVD is about 7 gigs in size which means i can't copy it to a 4.7 gig DVD (DVD-5) as is. I have tools like DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, but I'd prefer not to lose any video quality if I can help it. I have some Dynex DVD+R DL (8.5 gig) discs and I have burned the DVD data to one of those. It completes successfully and works fine when played in my computer, but not in any of my standalone DVD players. Is there something wrong with my media? Is there a difference between DVD-9 and DVD DL? (The DL box seems to say the model is DX-5DVD+RDL)? What should I be using and/or looking for?

For starters, I would never use dynex
Verbatim is the only DL+ media i use and everyone pretty much agrees verbatim is the most reliable & quality media.
Second, Does your standalone play DL media ? DL media has a lower playback compatability on standalones.
Third, if it's a region 2 dvd it's almost fopr certain a PAL dvd.
By ripping it and burning it back to dvdr it is region free, bit that does not mean your player will convert PAL to NTSC.
PC's will play either format. -
Hi-
If it's a Japanese R2 DVD, it's already NTSC, and it probably comes down to your player not playing dual layer DVDRs (if you've removed the region coding). If it's a European R2 DVD, then it's PAL, and it probaby comes down to your player not playing PAL, and maybe also your player not playing dual layer DVDRs.
So, either buy a region-free player that does the conversion, or start reading the guides about how to do the conversion while reencoding. -
I guess my real question is, I know I have plenty of double layer DVDs. Lord of the rings extended version, etc, that have a break because they pause for a split second during the middle of the movie (older dvd player). I checked the compatiblity chart for my player, and it does say that it does not play DL movies. So how is it I can watch commercial longer movies on my player and not burned ones. Is it because of the NTSC/PAL difference? because when I put it in, it just keeps loading and loading (FYI it is a toshiba SD 2109)
Also I should mention that it is a French DVD -
Dual layer retail dvd's are pressed,
Double layer dvdr's are different.
As i stated before, Double layer dvdR's have a lower compatability rate on standalone dvd players than single layer dvdR's.
And using a brand like "Dynex" does not help compatability either.
Odd's are it is prob. a PAL dvd.
Have you ever played a Double Layer dvdr on your standalone before ?
If so then it is definately a format/PAL issue.
Edit:
Actually it could also be a media issue as well as a PAL issue. -
It is more like pitted. The commercial DVD has laser pitted holes to reflect light back or away from the pickup. DVDR use laser altered(aka burned) chemical coating to do the same.

Store bought dvd's are "pressed", manufactured in a factory, they are not recorded as you do with a dvdr.
Dual Layer "pressed" dvd's are not the same as Double layer dvdr's.
Just because standalone dvd players will play store bought dual layer dvd's does not mean it will play any double layer dvdr's.
"pressed" discs have their data stamped onto them with a stamper made from a glass master.
A “glass master” of information is made which in turn produces “stampers” which are used for injection moulding the information onto foil. The mastered information is then protected by layers of polycarbonate plastic.
In simple terms a 'mould' is made with data etched into it from a DVD master disc. This part of the process is commonly known as 'Glass Mastering'. Once the mould has been produced it is then used to make your CDs or DVDs. Molten polycarbonate is forced into the mould and then cooled. The reflective layer is added which in turn is coated with a protective lacquer. Each disc is quality checked and the resulting CD or DVD is then ready for screen or litho printing which is an integral part of the production process. -
So you're saying the way commercial dual-layer dvds are manufactured makes them able to be played in most/all standalone dvd players (I'm not sure what it is about the difference that makes them readable, but Ill let that slide). But burnable ones are not "pressed", and therefore not playable in most dvd players?
