I have some XviD videos with AC3 sound but I want the audo codec to be MP3.
What I was wondering is if I can convert only the audio codec without having to convert the whole video, because by re-encoding the whole thing both audio and video I will loose video quality and it will take more time than if I could just convert the audio to mp3.

    I hope this is possible

P.S. I hope you understand what I mean, if not then ask me and I'll try to describe it better

Yes you can. Use VirtualDub. Load the AVI, set video to Direct stream (this makes VDub leave the video alone), set audio to full processing, select the MP3 codec and configure it to you liking (bitrate & c), then Save AVI. Done.

All good if it is an avi. gardar never said.

mencoder is also an option. mencoder.exe -ovc copy -oac mp3lame input.whatever -o output.avi

-lameopts help for a list of lame settings. Like -lameopts cbr:br=128 or preset=standard:fast

For VDub you will also need to have fccHandler's AC3 ACM codec installed.

I think it's pretty safe to assume most XviD movie are AVI (even if there are other containers)
