    investgating movie file types Ive found one called .7z

    it comes in pieces : aaaaa.7z.001 etc

    MacparDelux makes a main item called aaaaa.7z

    VLC seems toopen it but plays nothing. MPlayer OS X takes a long time and it shows up but does not play

    whats the story on these files and can they be played on a mac?

    .7z is a compressed file in the 7-zip format. Try p7zip or EZ 7z to decompress your file into something playable.

    This is a zip format produced by 7-zip which offers better complression than .zip or .rar and so the .001 files are from a single 7-zipped file that's been cut in to bite site chunks.

    There's no official MAC support but there is unofficial support at the bottom of the download page here...
