  1. I've always wondered: Is it possible to extract the mpeg-2 from the DVD container without transcoding it and processing it? (I'm thinking of how you can pull the MPG out of an SVCD with ISOBuster since it's already in mpeg format)

  2. With DVD one of the easiest ways to do that would be to use VOB2MPG. It will combine the VOB files into a single MPG file.

Not sure about SVCD, never played around with it, but I'm sure you'll get an answer here shortly about it.

Thanks for the VOB2MPG link. That's sort of what I was looking for, but is a little primitive. I could probably stand the two-click interface but, I just get a garbled mess of sounds on the audio track -- really bad noise. Thanks for the tip, anyway. Has it worked for you in the past with working audio?

  4. Yeah, I've used it several times without any audio or video problems. I wish I knew more to help you out.

    Good Luck!

You could always use DVD Decrypter. With DVD Decrypter: go into the settings and change the setting for file splitting from every 1GB to none, then go to Stream Processing and select just the video and audio you want (or deselect the items you don't want - i.e. other audio tracks, subs, etc.), then rip. Then after the file has ripped change the name/extension from ***.vob to ***.mpg. Very easy.

For some reason VOB2MPG doesn't work on my computer. So here are some alternative ways ...

If DVD Decrypter can rip the DVD (I say that as some newer forms of copy protection cannot be broken by DVD Decrypter) then you can use IFO mode which will allow you to RIP the M2V video file and the audio file of your choice so that you will have a separate VIDEO file and a separate AUDIO file. You can then mux or multiplex the separate video and audio files into a single MPEG file easily with a vareity of sotware (I use MPEG-VCR myself).

If you can't use DVD Decrypter and have to use DVDFab Decrypter then you end up with the usual VIDEO_TS folder of IFO, BUP and VOB files. You can run the VOB files through DGIndex and this will spit out a separate VIDEO file along with all of the AUDIO files (if more than one it outputs them all) ... then you just mux or multplex the VIDEO file with your choice of AUDIO file.

Just note that you can't mux or multiplex a MPEG-2 video file with a PCM WAV audio file although it is rare that a DVD only ever has just a PCM WAV audio file. There is no problem muxing or multiplexing MP2 or AC-3 audio with a MPEG-2 video file.
