i have read over the forums and come to the conclusion that many of you beleive it is NOT possible, can you explain why?
if the data is on the first track why wouldn't burning a VCD then taking that data and placing it on the first track of this CD-Extra in the data section work?
in Audio players it would normally skip over the VCD track and then in DVD players it should ignore the AUDIO stuff if it knows there is a VCD in the drive
can someone explain how this could be possible?
I am trying to make an Audio CD that is also a VCD with videos on it
no one ever explained except that the data is read a certain way. well, how can we make it so the data is read the way we want it?

You are missing several key points of information:
- VCDs are not CD-ROMs. The physical structure of the data on the first track is vitally important. A VCD player doesn't usually even read the filesystem at all -- rather, reading specific information at predefined sectors on the disc.
- CD-DA tracks are allowed on a VCD in the VCD specs. You don't have to do anything weird (like CD-Extra) at all. The only thing that matters is that the CD-DA tracks must come last. Mind you, not many VCD authoring programs can author CD-DA tracks on a VCD. The only one I know of for certain is VCD Toolkit.

cool
do you know where this can be downloaded and why is there no tutorial on this? -
Search for VCD Toolkit (or the full name Video-CD 2.0 Toolkit 1.0) on the forums or with Google. You will find it for download (it has been released for free).
There are no tutorials because no one has written one. Tutorials don't magically appear. You interested?

Hi Michael,
You seem to know lot about VCD's. I will appreciate help on following.
I am trying to play some VCD's on my two computers. I borrowed these from my friend who has four year old Micron computer and they play very well on that. It has Windows 98 SE.
1) I tried to play these VCD's on my IBM 380Z Laptop which has Windows ME using Windows Media Player 7. I can not play them. I can not also look at the contents of the VCD. VCD is not recognized by CD ROM drive which is Toshiba make and 24 spped.
2) I tried to play these VCD's on my desktop that has Windows 98 SE and Philips CD RW 8x4x32 and Delta DVD ROM 8 speed. I could not play them also both drives do not recognize the VCD.
Can you help.
Thanks.

sure interested in a tutorial!
but i of course don't know enough on the subject
what would it take for you to write up a detailed tutorial with screen shots and all and have it posted under the AUTHOR section on the side?
i found the program at www.icdia.org/sw_pc/vcdtools.html and on that page it says that vcdhelp.com has a "A very comprehensive tutorial"
i don't know what that person was on but i don't see one anywhere
it would be a nice addition to the site -
There's a guide for the toolkit in the "How To Author" section. It's been there for sometime.
http://www.vcdhelp.com/VCD2TK_Index.htm
The guide also has a link to an existing tutorial for the toolkit.

The primary problem with creating a VCD with CD audio tracks is that not all CD audio players will skip over the data tracks. Some players will play the tracks but not send the data to the audio outputs, but some players will, and make a hell of a lot of noise.
The "Red Book" specs for audio CD's and CD players were developed before CD-ROMs existed, so there were no provisions for dealing with data tracks. Some manufacturer's have data track detection built-in into their CD audio players, but it's not required by the specs.
The Video CD spec (aka "White Book"requires the first track be a data track, followed by optional MPEG A/V tracks, followed by optional CD Audio tracks.
The CD Extra spec (aka "Blue Book"was developed as a way to mix data and audio tracks together but prevent the data tracks from being played on CD audio players. CD Extra disks are multisession disks, with the first session made up of audio tracks and the second session made up of data tracks.
For a VCD or DVD player to recognize and play a video on a CD, it has to be formatted according to the White Book spec. CD Extra disks would probably be recognized only as CD audio disks, although it is possible to make a player that would recognize the disk as a CD Extra disk. I just don't know of any off the top of my head.
