My first post, if I'm not in the right forum let me know and I'll repost.

My problem is probably quit easy to solve but at this stage it’s doesn’t look so easy from where I sit – still very new to video manipulation. I’m beginning to understand some of what I’m up against as I read through the various articles on this site and wow, what a lot of excellent information.

I have several GB’s of MPEG-1 files sitting on my laptop that were created using my digital camera. I would like to make these movies available to other family members for viewing on there DVD players.

I just purchased an external DVD burner (Plextor) that came with Nero and was wondering what would be the best approach to offload these files?

Although the question above might be sufficient enough to get a proper answer, I’ll also ask a few specific questions.

    1. I’ve experimented a little creating a VCD. Are there any reasons, other then capacity, that I would want to put my MPEG-1’s on a DVD versus a CD.

    2. Nero allows me to create VCD’s but not DVD’s. Is this because I’m missing the required codec for that format. And if so, is purchasing the required Codec from Nero my only choice.

    3. What is the best option for splicing several MPEG-1 files together. Does Nero have an option for this.

    4. I’ve mentioned Nero a few times now and that’s not because I’m partial to that product, it just happens to be the tool that shipped with my Plextor drive. Up until now I’ve only concerned myself with JPEG files and have been using Adobe’s Elements to manage my fairly large, several thousand, picture library. I know that Adobe also has a product for video’s (Premier), would this be a good choice or is it just another over priced “commercial” product lacking in functionality.

Depending on the resolution of your mpegs, they may be DVD ready. Check with gspot and post the results. If they are DVD ready then all you need to do is 'author' them to create a DVD. Lots of good programs for that, look in the 'author' and 'tools' sections over there <<<<<<. Personnally I use TDA.

    edit for typo.

    Did you mean Gspot.

If so, not sure what information I need to pass along. When I ran Gspot against one of the files it didn't tell me very much.

I know the files are 640X480 and as I mentioned they are MPEG-1

What else are you looking for

640x480 is not valid for DVD which means you must re-encode to get them DVD compliant. I use TMPGEnc, but I have heard ConvertxtoDVD is easy and newbie friendly.

I would recommend DVDs for your files.

DVD compliant. Look to the upper left for 'What is ' DVD and you will see the specifications for the format. MPEG-1 will work on DVDs. You just need to convert the audio to 48K. If you use a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author, it will convert the audio to 48K. Worth the price for that and other reasons. IMO.

ZippyP. meant Gspot. Just a typo. Posting a screen shot from Gspot show us exactly what you are working with. Look here for how to post screen shots. Blank out the title of your file if you like:
