I have an avi file with an Xvid codec. It has hardsubs. Nothing is selectable. I'd like to edit these subs if possible-- change grammar, make the font bigger, the outline bolder, these sorts of things.

I've been hunting around, and I know there are programs like Subrip and DVDSubedit, but I can't really tell if either of these do what I want. DVDSubedit only loads vob's, and I'm having a difficult time understanding Subrip-- I'm not even sure if Subrip will do what I want. I think it's going to make an srt file for the subs (or a different type of subtitle file?), but even if it does that, can it "erase" the subs from the pic? I don't mind a bit of "residue", as I want to put the subs back on after editing/enlarging them.

Is this even possible?? I know there are programs for removing logos, etc.....

Just looking for some help on this. If I can't remove/edit the hardsubs, then so be it... I just don't want to waste my time trying to do something that can't be done. If I CAN do it, however, I'd really appreciate some pointers on this.

Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions.

Yes, but... It's quite difficult, and results are lousy.

If the subs overlay part of the video, then you have to use logo remover. And since subs change, you'll have to do a LOT.

Subrip WILL do what you want, but it takes quite a bit of training for it to recognize the hardsubs, and the accuracy is much lower than VobSubs, due to extra amount of data it must sort through.

  3. To remove hard encode subtitles, you must cut out the video (eg. VirtualDub filter: null transform --> cropping).
And since VirtuaDub cannot be set on 'direct stream copy', you'll have to choose another compression method: long time loss, plus the possibility to lower the quality.
    Is this worth it?

SubRip is used only to create a .SRT file from a DVD; it was born to create SRT files from DVDs, but now (advenced beta versions) can also create .SRT files reading hard encoded subtitles, but it's not hat you want to do.
