To All:
There has been some "discussion" on the hacks list for the DVP642 about how to convert it to 220v. Manija was good enough to post a first hack and it has since been refined. However, I think there are still problems, so let's ask and work out all the questions here.
First:
Verify that your player uses the Fairchild KA5H02659R series, mine particularly uses the 5M02659R (this is part of the series). It is the 8-legged IC on the powersupply board, with a good light you should be able to read the top.
The KA5H02659R datasheet is available here: http://www.datasheetarchive.com/semiconductors/download.php?Datasheet=1049453
Second:
The current version of the hack calls for replacement of these two capacitors:
C301 - MPX-X2 0.1uF 250/275v AC
C304 - Radial type, electrolytic 68uF 250V
with - 0.1uF 650v AC capacitor
and 33uF 450v capacitor.
Problem:
There is a major problem with this!!! Capacitor C301 is an X2 capacitor!!! These are also known as "Safety caps" and their use is required by law in most developed nations. The part in mine (US, Region1, 037) is a 250/275V X2. This is the same part used in 220v powersupplies of all types. Someone please explain why this is being changed to 650v. I understand safety margins in caps, but it is FAR more important that users keep an X2 if safety is the issue. 350V X2's are available though obviously very rare. DO NOT replace this with a radial electrolytic type, as it defeats the entire reason this cap is there at all! (Although the unit should still function).
Question:
As far as C304 is concerned, technically it's already big enough to run in a 220v circuit though it's margin is too slim for anything I'd use. Why 450V? Is this just an attempt to maintain the original 2:1 ratio? How was the capacitance change determined?
If we get all this worked out, I'll make a guide with photos and soldering notes. Thanks guys!
Regards
