I usually have one or two handy. I just finished The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It was decent Sci Fi - not as life-altering as some made it out to be. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. Next up is Gateway by Frederik Pohl (winner of the 1977 Nebula & 1978 Hugo awards).

EDIT: Oops! This was supposed to be off topic. Can someone move it, please?

  4. Gateway decent series. Right now I'm reading Clive Cussler. In my younger days I used to read Ed McBain, Doc Savage series, Tarzan, Astounding S & F magazine (Analog) and of course Agatha Christie.

I have a couple of Rankin's Rebus books in my TBR (to-be-read) stack. Last year, Rankin toured the U.S. promoting his latest book (at the time). And with him on the tour was Canadian author, Peter Robinson. My last book read was his novel, "Strange Affair." It's part of his Inspector Banks series which takes place, largely, in the fictional village of Eastvale (U.K.). If you like Rankin, give Peter's books a try, too (if you haven't already).

The Da Vinci code is actually a really badly written piece of pulp. I suspected as much when, as soon as it hit the best seller lists, there were 4 other books by the same author suddenly rolled out. He is a crap writer. Hopefully the film turns out better.

I try read a lot of film history and critiques (as time permits) and also have Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness sitting on my bedside table waiting to be got to.
    Read my blog here.

At least one of those books was out before the da vinci code. Likely all of them. I read the one before it, ok not the whole thing it wasn't my book, but I killed a sizable hunk in an afternoon once. its not so bad.

This was the last book I read. I finished it in about a day and half. Good read.

    Not such a great ending.

Prior to that, I read "Animal Farm". I had never read this book. It is quite good and then ending is a bit frightening.

  11. I just read "My Detachment" by Tracy Kidder. It's a memoir of his days as a lieutenant in Viet Nam. I only read it because I found out that it features a friend of mine as one of the main characters.

It's a pretty good read, even if you don't personally know Pancho.

Are Stephen King's new books part of the Dark Tower universe? I haven't read anything by him since.

He finished the Dark Tower series already. So the new one isn't, but the several before it were.

Stephen King / Dark Tower spoilers ...

Yeah, I know it's finished (since I read them all one-after-the-other). I'm wondering if his books written since Book 7 still relate to the overall plot that he used to tie everything of his together?

No. I mean, if you really, really, really concentrated hard, you could probably extrapolate some kind of tie to the Dark Tower series, but for the most part, no.

Dark Tower 7 was such a disappointment anyway that I sort of want to forget about the Dark Tower series. Well, at least until the followup to "Black House" is released.

I agree about being dissapointed. I was entertained for sure, but after Book 4 (Wizards and Glass), the series went down hill for me. I thought its apex had been reached.
