    Hi everyone

Would someone please tell me why my MP3 playback stutters while I download something? I also noticce the faster the download speed, the worse the stuttering becomes. My computer has lots of RAM and its processing rate is 566 MHz.

This stuttering does not happen when I play a CD in my CD-ROM.

    Thanks

If Windows XP goto device manager and look at the drive controllers. Make sure they are not in PIO mode.

If so uninstall the drive controllers and restart so they ReID.

    I've seen this happen before.

Considering that you only have a 544ghz processor I'll have to assume you have a very old slow drive. I'd suggest your you've hit the limitations of the drive. You're reading and writing to it at the same time, there's a limited amount of bandwidth and you have used it up....

Newer drives have huge amounts of memory for buffering in addition to their faster read/write speeds so this isn't a problem.

The CD drive is independant and only needs to read the disc so it's not an issue.

The 566MHz speed is, I'm assuming, the MEMORY BUS speed (not processor).

Uhhh, maybe you could fill out your COMPUTER DETAILS, especially if you want help on your "computer system".

    Define "sputtering".

Hell, we don't even know what your OS is.

I missed the mhz.... :P Just assumed he meant ghz without looking closely... hell maybe it is.

What I said still stands, if it's a newer machine though it'sd either has a crappy drive or it's set up wrong.

    Thanks for the replies.

    This is an old computer:

    The motherboard is a Soyo SY-6VBA 133.
The chip is Intel Pentium III.
    Processing rate 566 MHz.
    O/S is Windows 98SE.
    Soundcard: Sound Blaster PCI 128
    RAM: 750 MB

Internet Connection: DSL with the claimed rate of 1.2MB per second.
    Internet Explorer: version 6.0

Stuttering audio: hm..how do I explain it? OK, let's say, instead of hearing Streisand sing "People who need people...", I would hear "Ppppppeople who neeeeeed pppppeople..."

remember you only have one cpu chip.... and just about everything goes thru that chip..... programs running in the background.. then when you have your computer playing mp3's or streaming a music from some site, and then your trying to download things....... that why things are stutering.. it may help to disable some of that stuff that running in the background including the screen saver... and if your in 24 bit color... change to 16 bit color that will speed things also.... free up your system resources and such...

You obviously do not have a system powerful enough to "walk and chew bubblegum" at the same time. Either upgrade, or learn to live without multitasking.

My previous computer (98MB RAM, 233MHz mobo, Pentium 2, Windows 98, dial-up ISP - yes, those were the days ) played MP3 and downloaded large files (more than just a few MBs) at the same time without any problems.

    added notes:

I kind of suspect Mister Softee's behind-my-back "illegal" activities. For example, when I used Windows Media Player to play my compressed audio files, the POS kept trying to connect to some sh_tty sites and interfering with my audio playback.

Finally I got so fed up with Bill Gates's crap, I disassociated all applications from Windows Media Player, and made my Jet Audio Cowon (the very old version that does not connect to the internet) my default player.

The problems seemed to go away until I upgraded...guess what...POS Windows Media Player again.

Somebody, please give me a pie!

Yep! Crappy AOL dial-up (56Kbps) and no problems whatsoever with playing MP3 and dowmloading pretty larges files (say, +10MB) at the same time.

Now, I have a more powerful mobo, more RAMs, a supposedly better OS (second edition vs the first) and more important, a much much better connection of DSL.

I am hearing Belafonte sing "Day" without "O" even when I download only tiny file of +4MB!

Well that's the difference, dial up isn't going to put a big load on the HDD.
