Does anyone know of some easy to use, freeware animation .gif creators?? I want to make the cool things as you would see in sigs, but couldnt find anything free that was easy to use.

I tried Ulead which was a trial and such a hassle for me to do anything with, it mostly froze for the most part. Any advice would be appreciated

It's not free, but it's pretty inexpensive. There is a free trial, but I don't know what the restrictions are.

I use that frequently, haven't had any freezing problems but have had it unexpectedly close out... I save frequently. Having used it frequently I know some of the mechanics of using it seem counterintuitive if you have not used a animation program before but many of the other animation programs I have used are set up similarly. Any animation program is not going to be easy master. They are either a hassle or featureless.

Sorry can't suggest any freeware ones.

I can't vouch for any of these, but a quick search turned up :

thnx for the replies guys, going to give this a go for now, hopefully it doesnt overly limit me

@thecoalman, i still have it might give it another round, one thing that maybe caused the freezing is my gifs would export sooo big, and itd take forever... would u happen to know how offhand how i can make my uploaded gif/clip smaller in size/and or make it so the frames go faster?? i might have just been doing something wrong, i simply tried importing the video & exporting as a gif.

I've used Ulead's GIF Animator 5. It's not free (nor is it that expensive) and it is a little tedious but it works well.

I only work with small gifs so this works easiest for me, there may be an easier way to aplly to a large .gif

on the bottom select the first frame... Scroll to the last frame, hit shift and select the last frame. You hould now have all the frames selected. Right click and adjust the framerate...

You can select and adjust individual frames too with individual frame delays for each frame. Even adjust how the frame is removed.

Be aware that different browsers treat gif's diferrently... of course right? Last I checked the framerate adjustments work in IE but not in Firefox. That or FF doesn't like Ulead Gif's...

To resize use the same procedure to select all the frames, then from the menu bar select edit>resize image. That will bring up the resize dialog box, since you have selected the entire clip any changes you apply will be applied to every frame.. Note: this work with imported video since there is only one object in each frame, if you have a multiple objects it may probably won't work as well or at all since you need to either resize the canvas and the objects or merge all the objects then resize as a whole.... or something like that.... it's been a while since I've used it for anything but simple projects.

I know it can be frustrating to work with at times, I've banged my head against the wall a few times using it. Once you learn your way around it it's very nice to use because there are a lot features...

very clear and down to the point, thanks a lot, everything seems as it worked and went through

ive got it at about 100width X66 height at about 0.02 frames.. not sure what the standard size is, i too am also looking to make something small just to use as a avy or sig.. but only thing is i havent tried it out. i tried uploading over at imageshack but it says it's too big a file?! its only a little over 3 mbs -- also when i try opening it with my normal image viewer on windows it shows up as a bigger picture than the said settings I doubt that has anything to do with the changes i made though. any idea where i can upload this thing too? i want to see what magic i worked/if any

You could just open it directly with your browser, if that doesn't work open up notepad and paste the following:

    Code:
    [img]yourfilename.gif[/img]
save as anyname.html to the same folder your image is in and open it with your browser. BTW since there is no attributes set in the img src tag it will display at full size whatever that may be.

Apparently I'm not the only one who wanted to punch him in the face... :P

To get rid of the borders resize the canvas first, that should just crop the images. Like I said it's been a while since I have used that for anything even remotely elaborate. You could probably just load the current gif back into the animator and resize the canvas. Note the selction for where you resize from in the resize dialog box, choose the center which will keep the image centered.
