Query for NEC burner owners

Not sure if I should post this here or in the "authoring" forum, but here goes. I recently purchased an NEC DUAL LAYER 3550A burner on Ebay. All I want to do is burn my mpeg/avi/wmv/jpeg files onto DVD-Rs as backups. Nothing fancy.

In terms of burning software, someone told me that I'd need Nero version 7 or higher because I have a DL machine. Is this true? I can't use Nero 6.6? Also, the NEC site says I should download Firmware 1.05. Does that seem right, or is 1.07 a better bet?

If you are only burning single layer dvd-r's most burning software works fine.If you are going to burn dual layer disks,copytodvd,record now deluxe 7.3 Prassi,are some of the best for dual layer discs.
I have the 3540 and use the 1.03 firmware for it and record now deluxe,with verbatim dual layer or fuji-ricohjpn dual layer discs and just about any single layer dvd-r discs with no problems.If you are just burning data and not authoring and burning dvd's then you won't have a problem.

No you don't need to use Nero 7. You can use Nero 6.6 for burning DVD+R DL. I have an NEC 3520 with firmware 1.04 and have used Nero, DVDdecyrpter and Record now Deluxe to burn to Verbatium DVD+R DL.

Last minute problem: NEC says Firmware 1.05 should only be downloaded for the internal version of this burner. Where can I download 1.05 for my external model?
