Was anything else tweaked in the ipod settings because a preset file i used on the previous version produced a file that not only wouldn't drop into itunes but wouldn't even open in quicktime. I'm retrying just to make sure but is there anything about the ipod for tv setting we should know about?

Basically the settings I was using were the default ipod for tv setting with these changes:

    *2500 video bitrate
    *640 x 272

*80 audio bitrate (seems setting to 160 results in the wrong audio bitrate and from previous testing some people on here pointed out 80 produces a 159 audio bitrate)
    *48000 hz

    in options:
    *High Quality
    *2 pass encoding
*Decode with quicktime - no letterbox (when saving presets this option does not save)
*No encoding profile (this option also doesn't save when saving presets)
I know theres an ipod encoding profile but I never had to actually have that selected before this version and the vids worked perfect on the ipod.
    *Q: 2-4
    *keyframe: 30

Those were what i used before and worked fine over and over tried twice today in new version to no avail. Anything i'm doing wrong?

  2. The new version didn't change anything in iPod presets, I just added new features for PSP. Possibly email me test clips to major4@mac.com (use yousendit.com to send multiple MB files) and I'll check.

To extract a clip from the video I should use...? And how long of a clip would you like with said app...?

  4. Use a small test clip, like 5MB..

Just finished converting a couple of 1.5 hour videos from AVI over to H264 iPod use. I tried the new "2-pass" checkbox. My other settings (which I haven't changed) are:
    Qmin: 3
    Qmax: 30
Bitrate: 15% more than what ffmpegX recommends (when clicking the "Best" button).
Image size: The biggest I can set using the "rule of 16's" and the iPod's 76,800 max pixel count.
    ME Function: multi-hexagon.

The 2-pass setting works fine. I haven't run any "side-by-side" tests of quality yet but will do so just to see if, when displayed on TV using the iPod's AV cable, there's any appreciable improvement.

Yeah I actually figured my problem out. My source file was f'd in some way so sorry for jumpin to conclusions. Would still like to know why we have to set the audio to 80kbit/s to get the 160kbit/s.
