  1. Software Using: Nero 7 (Nero Vision)

I have a number of "Subtitled" movies on my computer and when I burn the movies to DVD, it chops off a border all around the movie image. Why is it doing this and is there a away I can fix this?

I'm using Nero because I'm new to this and it seems pretty easy to burn DVD.

    Thanks For Any Help,

The problem lies with those who put the subtitles in the wrong place. It is a common problem with downloaded fansub anime. If you want the technical rundown, look up Overscan in the glossary. All movies, TV shows etc. have part of the image around the edges missing.

You can't fix it with Nero.

The only solution is to resize the image down to fit, then add borders around the outside to bring the resolution back up to compliance.

There are a couple of solutions. I prefer the FitCD method - use fitcd to create the basic avisynth script required to resize and border the movie. Feed this to an encoder, then author and burn.

There is also a way to do this in tmpgenc, but as I don't use it, I don't have the details. A search for overscan borders will get you detailed solutions.

To put it bluntly, it's not a problem, it's a WAD (work as designed).

Subtitles are only supposed to use 66 to 75% of the width of the screen. Use any more, and you run the risk of getting into the overscan area and get chopped off.

Fansubs don't seem to care and often ignore this general subtitle rule, thus they get chopped.

What's worse, overscan depends on the TV and the player being used. It's NOT a constant. Some players only overscan about 5% whereas others may overscan as much as 15%.

As Guns!inger said, the only way is to re-encode the movie by adding an overscan border ALL AROUND the video, as much as 24 pixels. Then you may see black borders all around, but at least nothing will be chopped off.
