im tryin to use sagetv to record xfiles the series. and these stupid playoffs are screwing everything up because sagetv's guide is completely wrong. The playoffs will run over till i dunno 12:30 or 1:30 i dunno really but the point is
I get half of the playoffs then half xfiles, then the next one comes on and i get half and half again...this continues and screws the whole night up usually.
as many recordings i have its not going to be possible to chop and crop all these. just gunna delete them i guess.
I also have another prob. thow. Whenever i record 2 or more shows that happen right after another, the first 5 mins gets cut off of my recordings. this doesn't happen if i record just one show. My guess is some decoding or something is happening and it doesn't get a chance to record the next show at the beginning....anyone have a fix for this or something? its really lame.

hellbringer,
I have not used SAGETV, but my PVR software has a setting that allows the program to remain on after a recording. Such that it does not have to load and restart its processes. Thus, there is virtually no delay between back to back recordings, even when it has to switch channels.
Otherwise, it takes a minute or so to initialize. When I record, I always set the time to start 5 minutes before what is advertised and continue for 5 minutes after the scheduled end time. Often networks adjust their schedules and thus blows out the advertised scheduled start times. Sometimes the programs actually do run longer that the allotted time slot. Hence, the extra 5 minutes at the end. It is a trivial thing to cut those beginning and endings if not used.
What angers me most is those bleepin times when they choose to do an unannounced emergency broadcast test right in the middle of a program that I am recording. arrrrgh.
Check your software preferences or setup to see if there is not an option to change the delay times. If not, I would consider a different package.

Back when I used a local cable companies PVR to record shows it would always cut off the last few minutes or cut off the first few minutes of these shows. I found out this had to do with the way they had their program guide setup and some stations were "off" as I was told. My response was for them to come and pick up their useless box and stop charging me. I now use my own home built PVR in my HTPC to record any shows that need recording. This may not be the same situation but if you are using some form of guide to perform your recordings it just might be the problem. I now manually set the station and recording times. I give myself leeway on either side of the program to allow for when the station timing is off a little.
There is nothing you can really do about sports on TV. I really do not understand why major sports are still on regular stations. Isn't there a couple dozen dedicated sports channels? I know I watch or I should say listen to a few of those stations. I think all major sports should not be broadcast on regular TV stations. They can easily be broadcast on any one of the many stations dedicated to their type of programming.
Another option for you is to purchase the X-Files DVDs. If you buy the collectors editions you get additional shows that were never broadcast , tons of background information, and behind the scenes making of your favorite episodes. I believe it was Season 3 includes a huge coffee table style X-Files book with details on every episode and another includes a book with X-Files Lore. They are a great value and you can watch the episodes in the order they occured rather than scattered episodes. -
This cut off could be while the temporary recording file is permanently saved. It might be counterintuitive but you may want to save to the same drive as the temp file as this only involves a file name change and not a transfer of the entire file to a different drive.
