I just picked up one of these externals at Best Buy this past weekend, I sold my 720UL last week to a friend. I must say this unit has some nice weight and feel to it compared to the 720. I'm thinking the switch between Lite-On to BenQ might have upped the quality a bit. This is not to rag on the 720 at all, my only gripe were when you have the unit vertical, the tray and door made this creaking noise when it opened and closed. The 810 is built like a tank, nice solid feel, mirror reflection on the door, status light glows/blinks from behind door, no extra noises when it opens and closes, good price, 8x DL burning.
Weird thing is Best Buy has this unit listed at $159 with a $30 mail-in rebate. The 800UL is still being sold for $179, and my 720UL that I bought back in May was $229 w/tax. I see the price of these burners dropping very fast along with media that they can burn.

Its been a little over a month. How do you like your sony drive? I have been looking and am thinking about getting an external. I currently have a sony u12a. I like it because at the time (2002) the Sony burnt both +&- dvdr's.
With the dual layer coming out.. I like the flexability of burning both +&= in regular dvd's as well as the dl.
Let me know how things are going and if y ou still like.
Thanks -
No complaints yet. Burns DL media along with every thing else without a problem. My only gripe is Sony takes forever with rebates.

I also bought the 810 - it's a great drive. My Dell laptop DVD burner would burn a DVD, but it would not be recognized in certain players - don't know why, so I bought the 810. I made sure it wasn't a Lite-On prior to buying it - I'll never buy Lite-On again.
810 is an excellent drive. -
At the moment, priced down to $139 @ BestBuy.

I just purchased this drive yesterday to burn some home/vacation videos for my family members. It is hooked up through FireWire, updated to the latest firmware, but there is some weird things happening.
In Sonic RecordNow! Deluxe, it sees the disk as 16x, but it takes around 16 minutues to burn.
In Nero, I burn the DVD, and it goes at 16x takes about 5 minutues, then I goto make another disk, then it says its 16x but takes around 16 minutes to complete. Then the next disk I burn goes at 16x and takes 5 minutes.
So every other disk I'm burning in Nero with this drive takes 16 minutes, while the others take 5 minutes. I can't figure out why...
