My recorder has the ability to Convert from PAL. As I have finally been able test with a PAL DVD region 2, it will playback as NTSC and does the job quite well. I have the recorder in region free mode. I come to discover that when I copy PAL dvd to hard drive it does not convert to NTSC but is simply a copy of the DVD. I would like to know if there is a recorder that can copy to hard drive the setting the Recorder is in like my being set for NTSC? In other words can I copy a PAL DVD to hard Drive and it would be in NTSC if I so choose?

Secondary question... if a DVD is recorded in Region free mode will it play back on a DVD player that is region specific?

    Thanks.

Yes if it is a format the dvd player will play.
In other words, if you copy a region 2 pal dvd and burn it back to a dvdr, it will no longer be region encoded (actually all region encoded) and will play on a dvd player no matter what region it is set to, as long as it will play or convert PAL to NTSC.
Region & format are two diff. things.
