welcolm welcolm one and all, tommorow with the help of you kind people i will do my tests and maybe have agood night sleep for the first time since this breakdown
hi, some who have seen my post s about my nervous breakdown about if my dvd-rs will stand up against a hdtv screen. i have found the solution but need some help getting there

i am going to dixons tomorow with 9 disks total which are
    a) dvd(8.5 gig)
    b) dvd-r(4.7 gig)
    c) hdtv(?) downloaded high defenition quality clip (not a rubbish avi rip of hdtv)

i will try my disks on 3 and maybe 4 platforms

    a) standard tv plasma
    b) high defentition plasma
    c) standard tube screen
    d) maybe a home cinema system

hopefully i wont need to try different models exetera but can assume i picked good enough ones to base my tests on

my 9 discs will be ,

i need help with disk 7

i will play all disks on each screen to compare

film suggestions please,1,2,3 all of the same film
testing dvd's hmm which film to test, the incredibles, lotr, mission impossble? (the film i use could be important so help with that part too if you can)

    disk 1. standard dvd
D2. a 4.7 dvd-r copy of the above- with no extras, burned with 1 click copy
D3. a standard 4.7 compressed dvd with extras included (1clickcopy)

discs 4 5 and 6 all the same as above but burned with dvdshrink (for my piece of mind, not about hdtv but about which is a better dvd compressor, please suggest another compressor and i will test it to)

(xvx)disk 7. a downloaded few minutes of high definition quality dvd
    8. same part of the film abouve but standard dvd quality
    9. a 4.7 gig version of the dvd above

    to sum up

    d1 dvd
    d2 dvd-r includes extras --- 1 click copy
    d3 dvd-r no extras --- 1 click copy
    d4 dvd
    d5 dvd-r includes extra ---dvdshrink
d6 dvd-r no extras ---dvd shrink
d7 5mins hd qualityon a dvd (best quality no compression)
d8 same 5 mins of the hd clip but standard dvd quality
d9 same 5 mins of the hd clip but in dvd-r quality

i wont do any hd comprssion tests unless you guys help with that

to do disk 7 ill need to complete 3 stages

    1. get high definition quality movie (something ill have standard quality of)
    2. without loosing any quality convert its format to dvd player playable
    3. put this quality onto a dvd player playable dvd-r

    also other problems are

Will the dvd player in the shop be able to play the high definition quality dvd (its a normal 4.7 dvd-r but can the dvd player output the dvd quality knowing the tv CAN handle it, i assume it will be a good player)

its a big one guys but i think we need some sort of tests because people do wonder if there dvd's will become so bad compared to hdtv (e.g once you go black you dont go back, im not black by the way)

thanks and please dont think of me as a joke

  2. Regardless of what the DVD player "knows" about the TV, it is totally unable to output an HD signal. Done, over and out.

The only viable solution would be a player capable of playing hi-def Xvid files, the problem there being that your local store would be unlikely to have such a player available.

Suggest a combination of very bright and dark movies, live action and CGI. Each have different characteristics which can be hard to display.

Disney's fantasia 2000 has some very good quality CGI, the initial attack sequence in the movie Gladiator has lots of motion, fireballs, etc and is my favorite encoder test. Neither is available in HD, SFAIK.

Perhaps watch your local satellite or cable HD broadcast schedule, go to the store when a DVD you have is being shown in HD. First you need to find out how your store has the TVs connected so you know which service to check.

Seriously, I'd wouldn't bother with Plasma. Look at newest generation LCD instead - Sony Bravia V-series is a good start. I have yet to see a plasma display capable of producing a clean image, even with HD source. LCD has finally started to live up to it's potential, is cheaper to run, and will soon leave Plasma in the dust as the large screen format.

I second, not going Plasma. I myself prefer DLP, but LCD is fine as well

For rear-pro or projection, I think you are right, although again, LCD is catching up.
