After having a ton of problems with bad disks from my latest batch of Ritek I decided I needed to confirm that my drive (DRU710a latest firmware) is working fine before I invest in a spindle of Taiyo Yuden. The only thing I could find in a hurry was some of the Sonys down at Best Buy. I bought a ten pack. I figured these are listed as "first class" media so at least I knw the DVDs were of good quality.

I fire up Nero and burn and it automatically selects 16x as the speed. It reports 4:55 for the time it will take which is what I get on other 16x media. But when it counts down and gets to 0:00 the burn is only 50% done and takes another 4:55 to finish. I ran tests and I got a great burn and the CDspeed qulaity tests were 95 which I am happy with.

Why is it taking so long? Nero says it is burning at 16x but it feels more like 8x. Anyone?

    Thanks

  3. also, on a side note, nothing made by sony is "fisrt class" EVER.... (sorry, just wanted to express my distaste for them....) also, you may wanna check that your drive isnt being limited by another program (nero drivespeed, ect) to burn at a max of 8x speed....

I used to own a Sony burner (DRU-500A) which never burned at the rated speeds. 4X Riteks would always burn at 2X, no matter which burning software I used, even with the latest firmware, checked all settings, DMA enabled etc...

I switched to Pioneer (109XLC) and never had a problem since.

I bought this drive in August of this year and I just flashed it with the latest bios......BYX5?? or something. The thing is that it burns the Ritek 16x media at 16x.....4:55. But it has errors on it. The Sony media comes out okay and says it is burning at 16x but it takes the time that an 8x would.

I thought Sony DVD+r was considered more reliable because it is made in Japan?

my sony drive (dru510a) needed a program called DSS-Drive Speed Selector to unlock full speed burns. Otherwise it would only do half of claimed write speeds on DVD. Check for it on the Sony website...

So, have not had any good burns at 16x correct?

I had a problem with my 710a burner in reguards to 16x media and it was cause I skip one of the firmwares. My original was BY02 and then I went to BYX4 then BYX5 had to go back from the start then it work. As for the sony 16x media I see that it got mixed reviews. As for the quality of Sony 8x Japan media at least in my 710a I get great burns just secong to TY.
