Recently I decided to jump into the realm of converting my home videos to divx avi and mpg files.
To learn a bit, I got a hold of some good quailty mpgs and divx avis to look at so I can see what settings I should use.
I got a hold of a dvdrip in divx format. The file size fits on one 700 meg CD and the quality of the video and sound is outstanding.
I've been working in VirtualDub to try and create a divx of the same quality while keeping the size small enough to fit on one cd. I can't figure out how they got such great quality in the small file size.
Basically I have an mpg file that is about 880 meg. The visual and audio quality of this file is the same of the dvdrip divx.
Whenever I pull the the mpg into VD and set the values, the video quailty of the avi goes to crap. I gets digitized and the dark areas of the video start to block. No more smooth color transitions.
I've tried using both 4.12 and 3.11 divx and the quailty is about the same.
I noticed the mpg has a video rate of 1150 and the audio is 224/44. I've tried setting the divx values to exactly the same and the quailty still turns to crud. No matter what I do, I just cant' get good divx video that isn't blocky.
Can anyone give me some pointers?
