  1. I seem to be having major problems recently trying to backup my DVD's.

I currently use Smart Ripper to rip to the HDD and I'll either use DVD shrink or Nero to re-rip to HDD and make it so that it'll fit on a 4.7GB DVDR.(When I was having problems I thought that it could have been because it was too much for Nero to compress and burn at once so that's why I tried it this way and it seemed to work for a while). Anyhow, once it's compressed, I'll use Nero to burn it which it will burn fine (supposedly) but then I'll use the Nero scan-disk utility and it will find errors, or if I try to rip the burnt copy to my HDD, it will come back with CRC errors. Or the scan-disk will come back fine and I can't rip it to the HDD OR everything will come back fine and skip on my stand-alone DVD player.

Is there a sure-fire way out there to verify the data integrity of the dvd and data? I can burn cd's and data dvd's fine but I keep making coasters when it comes to the actual dvd movies. Quite frankly I'm getting annoyed with Nero (and yes I've tried Roxio in the past which worked for a while and then crapped out on me too) It has gotten so bad that I actually went out and bought another DVDR and I'm thinking that it isn't the hardware at all because my old DVDR was doing the same darn thing my new one is. I've updated my firmware on the DVD burner and updated Nero so I haven't a sniff where the problem is. It also isn't the dvdr's I purchased because I've been using several different brands and my friends are using the same brand without problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it's not the discs, it's the burner. That said, unless your friend has the same burner, using the same discs won't guarantee success. Different burners like different discs.

I use DVD Info Pro to test my burns, although I have used Nero Speed Disc in thepast and it seems to do a good job.

What brands of discs have you tried ?
What has changed since you were able to burn successfully ?
New DVDR ? - New DVD writer ? clarify please.

  3. That's the weird thing. A buddy of mine has the same burner as me and was only giving him issues with my media, but once he updated the firmware it worked fine. I've used a no-name dvd-r (it is literally no-name. When I bought it there was no label with a brand and the dvd's are plain, nothing on them either), I've also used a brand called Ascent and Sony.

My old DVDR was an Aopen and it's doing the same thing my new burned is. They both seemed to work for a while and then crapped out on me. Same with Nero and Roxio. Both worked great for a bit then crapped out on me too. I've used the 3 different brands with both DVDR's and as far as I can remember I haven't done anything different to warrent the burner not working properly.
