Jesus Christ! The main reason I bought the Pio was because of MN, XP+ and Dual Layer capability, but damnit I can't get any -DL at reasonable prices. They are constantly having sales for +DL at 20 bucks for a 10pack while -DL's are around 16 bucks for a 3pack. Some online places are having 7 dollar rebates, but those rebates are hell to deal with, and they'll charge me S/H, and tax since I live in the same state, which doesn't make it a deal at all.

You can't even booktype + media to DVD-ROM and have the Pioneer recognize it. Is Pioneer stupid or what! All of us who own one can't even use one of the key features because it's limited to their bs propriety.

I would have bought the Sony with XP+ and -+DL features if it had an MN recording mode.

if you think your media is expensive just imagine the poor saps who bought into the Iomega Zip Disc hype of years past. Their media is still more expensive then DL DVD media and stores considerably less amounts of information. DL media has dropped considerably in price and will continue it's downward spiral as next year DL media will be supplanted by next gen 30-50GB optical storage.

Yep - I remember buying my first 10-pack of 100MB Zip discs at Costco for $100! Thanks for letting me relive that pain.

Please excuse my ignorance - What is "MN recording mode"?

MN stands for Manual Recording Mode. it allows the end user to choose the best quality depending on what's being recorded. Don't feel so bad. I still have my old zip drive because quite a few universities still use them.

    $1 for a 1.44MB floppy, or $10 for a 100MB Zip disc. It was a no-brainer.

  8. Incredibly, the 1.44 MB floppy has out lived them all. You still see them on many new computers.

USB memory keys are the "new" floppies now.

    simmer down now...

you didn't really ask a question. just made a rant about how media is expensive. You were answered in kind about how this is historically accurate.

Didn't really have a question. Just wanted others opinions.

I don't think it's a fair comparison because you have double layer which is much cheaper. The Zip drives didn't have 2 different formats. Why is the double so much cheaper than duals? And why won't the 533 accept the media when it's booktyped to DVD-ROM. SO DIFFICULT that stupid company.

actually the zip has several formats. ever try using a zip250 disc in a zip100 drive? I was just out shopping and noticed the pio 533 which was silver and had an 80gb hdd. the tag underneath the product said it only could use DVD-R DL. maybe that's your problem?
