I'd love to be able to load up a DVD-R with over a thousand songs and play it through my stereo system. Can I do it with a standalone DVD player?

Any DVD Player that can read the mp3 format (which I would imagine is most DVD Players nowadays) will be able to do this, I think.

No, not "any". Some players make the assumption that any DVD is a Video DVD, and don't understand data DVD, just data CD. Tho I think they are in a vast minority.

My Zensonic Z330 can do it off DVD-R. As mats said though, a number of "multi-format" players just don't like data DVDs, and must use CDRs or CDRWs for MP3, Divx, Xvid etc etc. It really depends on your individual player.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. The Cyberhome models will but they can be picky about the sample rate.

Is there still a limit to the amount of MP3 files or folder depth on MP3 DVD media?

I'd say that's very individual to make and model.

I must agree the Phillips DVP-642 is very good. It's also quite thin for those who are looking to stack components. It's cheap, it's reliable, and plays just about anything you find.

You should have added a disclaimer about the effect of adding cereal to the loading tray of the DVD player may cause undue harm to the electronics of your machine. You may laugh but you'd be amazed how many times I've had to pull lunch meat out of a DVD/CD Player. Bologna seems to be the most common but I've seen cereal and chips as well.

This is one feature that I was really mad my panasonic did NOT support when I bought it. I should have read more about it. But now that I have an mp3 player, it's easier just to hook that up to the system.
Mine does mp3 cd's, but not DVD's. BOO!
