Okay so a few very simple questions on this one, have pretty much studied the specs up and down, and searched the forums on these but cannot find the information I am looking for...

    Hybrid dubbing:

I noticed on one of the Pioneer models (think it was the Pioneer DVR-633H) a review somewhere mentioned:

"This model can take a recording that is on the HDD and hybridly dub/compress it so that it fits an appropriate size (e.g. a single layered or dual layered DVD-R) in under a minute"

Is this feature also available on the Pioneer DVR-433H, DVR-533H, DVR-633H, and 430H, 530H and 630H models?

And is this feature available on the Panasonic EH50D and EH60D ?

    Picture quality:

It is stated the Pioneer models use an improved "picture filtering" method to get the best possible picture from what it is seeing, as does the Panasonic EH50D, whereas the Panasonic EH60D uses a DVB tuner so is therefore almost close to perfect... but how do the pictures compare in reality?

    Timeslip (VR Mode for DVD-RW's):

I remember reading somewhere that the Pioneer uses VR mode (allowing playback while still recording), but the Panasonic does not... is this true of all the Panasonic models? Is timeslip not useable on HDD recordings?

    Editing/Cutting:

While using a DVD-RW disc on the Pioneer, I believe commercials can be edited/cut from the recordings, is this also possible on the Panasonic? If not possible on a DVD-RW, is it possible to do on the HDD?

    Record modes:

The Pioneer has standard record modes XP+, XP, SP, LP, EP etc. as does the Panasonic, however the Pioneer also appears to have 32 record modes that allow you to cycle from MN 32 (best qual) all the way to MN 1 (worst quality). Does the Panasonic have anything like this?

    This does not sound right....

"Is timeslip not useable on HDD recordings?"

    Yes on both brands....

    "commercials can be edited/cut "

can be done on HDD with both brands...

"Pioneer also appears to have 32 record modes "

Panasonic has FR mode that does similar thing but not exactly the same.

  3. I have a Pioneer 531 and a Panasonic ES10.

The Pioneer can copy from hard drive to a X16 dvd in one minute but it is a bit misleading. It actually says it can copy one hour of video in SEP mode ( 10 hours ) to a X16 dvd in one minute.

The Pioneer's manual modes ( MN1 through 32 ) go in five minute increments up to 105 minutes then it is ten minute increments up to 240 minutes, 30 minute increments up to 300 minutes, 60 minute increments to 480 minutes, 120 minute increments to 720 minutes, with the last increment 82 minutes between 720 and 802 minutes of record time. The Panasonic simply allows programming in hours and minutes the length of the recording with the minimum increment always one minute.

The Panasonic does not do VR with dvd-rw only dvd-video mode, but it does it with dvd-ram allowing pretty much the same features.

In the test at this link, the new Pioneers have a bit softer image than the old,

Sorry to bring this one up again...

...but does anyone have access to a manual for the Pioneer 433/533/633 (or similiar) models?

    I had mentioned above...
"This model can take a recording that is on the HDD and hybridly dub/compress it so that it fits an appropriate size (e.g. a single layered or dual layered DVD-R) in under a minute"

Was looking at the 433 in a big store and there just happened to be a manual for it laying on top of the player... so I had a read...

Chapter 1 Page 6 it states:
"You can choose to copy material at a different recording quality from the original. For example, you might want to copy an XP mode (highest quality) recording on the HDD to SP (standard play) quality on a DVD so that you can fit other recordings on the same disc"

So in otherwords, this player can transcode an already recorded HDD recording to fit an e.g. DVD-R disc?

Anyone any info on how successful this is, and can the Panasonic ES-50 / ES-60 do this ?

From what I have read all players will do that but be prepared to lose PQ because you must decode and re-encode when changing recording modes.
    I'm #3 and I don't even try!
