i have a file that's wmv3 and is in a mkv container. i'm trying to reencode it. i can demux the video, audio and subs but i can't reencode the video to something else, say, xvid, and neither can i simply mux the video and audio again. i don't have any problems with playing it, just that i can't reencode it.

does anyone have any ideas how to resolve my problem? thanks in advance.

    what tools have you tried?

you could try Stoik Video Converter

or try avisynth and open the avs in virtualdub, read https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=284288

hmmm... i've tried stoik before. an error occured right at the start. it said something about not being able to open some .avs file. the error message also provided the path to where the file should be. i went and looked, and that .avs file was there. so i really don't know what's wrong. but i haven't tried the avisynth thing yet so i'll go try it now. i'll post again later on what happens. thanks.

edit: i tried the method in the link you provided. all i got when i played video.avs was a black screen. the video length was correct, however.

er... i tried opening the mkv in virtualdub with the method you provided in that link. some sort of error occured and i could only do direct stream copy.

then i tried demuxing the mkv with mkvextractgui and then using that same method on the audio-less avi. i got an error message when opening the file with virtualdub. something about avisynth open failure: directshowsource could not open as video or audio. video returned:" directshowsource: graph refused to run: unspecified error." audio returned:" directshowsource: the filter graph manager won't talk to me" (c:\[pathname]\video.avs, line 1])

i'm serious about this. not trying to make fun of anybody with that graph manager won't talk to me thing. i really got these error messages.

VirtualDub requires a VfW decompressor so for WMV9 that means WMV9 VCM or ffdshow.

You got WMV9 VCM? Also for ffdshow you need to enable WMV9 support in the VfW decoder tab or it won't do anything.

erm... i'm not too sure. i got it from the latest cccp pack. the cccp faq say it's from 9/20 and that their version can't play wmv9 cause they removed it from their ffdshow.
