Is it possible to upgrade to OS 10.4.X without upgrading Quicktime? And if so, how?

    um,
    well it is possible.
But is it worth the headaches you'd encounter?

You could update from a Factory OSX 10.4 DVD,
then go to Apple's Support Page,
and download the QT 6.52 re-installer for
    QT 7.

That would get you back QT 6.52.

Or you can try Dan's trick which seems
to work. Or you could just be like me, and stay at
    OSX 10.39....

The re-installer for 6.5.2 only runs in 10.3.9.

    um, yes and no.
that is Apple's official word on the subject.
It can work in OSX 10.42, have personally done it on two machines,
but have found the headaches it causes in instability with Pro apps
    to not be worth it.

    to get it to work,
    read here.
    Dave Mucci, third post down.
the trick with that I have found, is that you have to be on QT 7.01.
if you have already made the leap to 7.02, then you first have to
downgrade to 7.01 via the 7.01 installer, THEN use
Dave Mucci's trick to get 6.52 on Tiger.

Much better is to do Dan's Trick, which is to install the QT 7.02, use its
Libraries, and then use the QT 6.52 PLAYER app to access those libraries
for H.264 encoding [ I'm assuming here that's why you want to
    go to all this trouble...]
For more on Dan's trick, which is the best way to go if you
just need the pro abilities of the QT 6.52 player.
    here
    Quicktime Kirk's post 5 down describe's a variant on Dan's trick

but if all you want to do is encode h.264, why not just use ffmpegx, v.009u?
the one just released this week, which encodes video in H.264 for the iPod?
Or do you also need it for Widgets?
