I've successfully backed up a dvd to xvid using the guide below

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221896

But now my phillips dvp-642 won't play my xvid. Is there anything in this guide that would prevent my player from playing my xvid.

It has to be the file because I can play other xvids with no problem.
    My player doesn't give me any errors when I attepmt to play it. It loads (reading index) and then the little display brings up the "00:00:00" as if its about to start the movie and then the word "Stop" appears in the little display. Now on the TV screen itself, at the very bottom it shows;

    "filename: Madagascar ** 00:00**"

Don't know what its trying to say, but its there.

Now that you've done it the long (and best) way, do it with AutoGK, and make sure to tick the ESS compatibility profile.
I bet you're using some XviD feature (like QPEL) not supported by the ESS decoder.

  5. Mpeg4Modifier can detect GMC and QPEL. Also, be sure you finalized your DVD.

  7. You can use Alt+PrintScreen to capture only the active window!

  9. Did you finalize the disk? Try remuxing the file with VirtualDubMod.

Do you mean finalize the disc that I used to burn the xvid on? If so, I did.

    Anyone?

  12. Yes, I was asking if you finalized the disk on which you put your xvid file. Most Divx/DVD players don't like unfinalized disks.

As I ststed earlier, I did finalize the disc. There has got to be a solution to this problem. I mean all the rest of my xvid and divx files play fine on the very same media burned the exact same way, with the same exact program.

There has got to be something that is being overlooked.

one other thing you need to check.. the bit rate should be under 1000.. do a right click and then properties on the file and then post that make sure its under the summary tab. that will show a number under video if its much above 160 you will have issues.. it will work above that but post it anyway just for more info

First off, can anyone tell me if this Guide below creates an xvid that is ESS chipset compatible?

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221896

Secondly, after going back and making sure that I followed the directions of the guide correctly,I noticed in the part that instructs you to delete any zones in the zone area I forgot to do that.

    I had:

Can anyone tell me if this would cause a playback problem?

  17. That Zone setting will not cause a problem. Xvid lets you mark sections of the video which are handled differently. The indicated settin simply means the entire video, from frame zero to the end, will be treated equally.

Single pass, Target Quantizer 4 should be fine. 949 kbps average is OK. The Frame size 640x344 shouldn't be a problem. You didn't use QPEL or GMC. You finalized the disk. A/V interleaving looks OK (1 frame). I don't see anything that wouldn't work on the DVP 642.

its possible that it was just a bad burn.. all looks good to me.. i have the 642 also.. and play xvid all the time.. did you burn at 16x? or is it even a dvd.. if cdr is it over burnt? ifit is to much that might be an issue.. but only at the end.. you have a way to burn the same file to a RW? or try edit and cut a 30 min section and burn to a rw to see if it plays on rw.

only ideas.. your setup should work

  20. The ESS chipset doesn't like GMC, QPEL, very high bitrates (I don't know what the limit is but it's well over 2000 kbps), and large frame sizes (definitely not over 720x576, the limit might be lower though). I'm pretty sure AC3 audio is OK.

Well, since I couldn't find a solution as to why the xvid I created using the guide below wouldn't work in my DVP-642.

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221896

    I followed this adivce:

And wouldn't you know it, the xvid worked in my phillips divx player
I know there are some that aren't particular about one click conversions, well in my case, I tried it the long way and I was successful in creating an xvid, but it didn't work in my divx player and no one could come up with a solution as to why this was. So I tried AGK's way and now I'm happy

Others also commented that doing it AGK's way would take away from the quality, well I can't tell; they both look the same to me. Thats not saying that they aren't different, thats just saying that I can't tell.

There are also those that totally disagree with taking a dvd and backing it up to xvid or any compression other than to a dvd-r because of the loss of quality; again, I can't tell. As a matter of fact, as my kids were watching the xvid, my wife thought it was the original dvd My head is still swollen :P

Probably the only way to see a quality difference between a very good xvid and the original is to have two TVs and players playing both the xvid and original side by side. Now if thats the only way to see a difference, then that speaks well for the xvid.

Besides, if you are willing to go through all of that to prove that xvids aren't worthy, then you need a life.

In all my xvid conversions , I leave the xvid codec settings alone , sometime's I might increase the bitrate , but only after watching what vdub says will be the final size ... I like to see around 600mbs , if not , I stop , and change the video bitrate to a higher value .

I also resize to something like 620x476 , this is only a sample , I dont recall the exact resize I use , only it must be dividable by 4 .

The audio I use is mpeg layer 3 at 48kbit/s 24,000 hz , stereo 6kbs

This always plays with no problems , and no one here has complained yet or atleast complained of sore eye's when watching them ... so far , no one here has gone blind ... lol

Dual pass is used for video source with alot of fast moving areas and takes a lot more to set up for near perfect results .

I never touch vbr for audio , thats asking for problems .
