Read www.nomorecoasters.com
The best media for playback, all things considered, is probably Mitsubishi media (MCC codes). The AZO dye and high quality discs do well in terms of playback.
Taiyo Yuden and Maxell do well too.
In the UK, be careful of crap. You have more junk than not. Easier to buy media in the USA, more high quality stuff for better price, and easier to find. Shop at a store like www.svp.co.uk or www.cd-rmedia.co.uk where you get to see media code. Or find Verbatim branded media locally.
I would suggest one of these:

I have been doing a large family project for some time now. It seems like everyone has a different player. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim branded MCC ( Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. ) have been the most successful in playing on the most players.

I agree. For DVD player, no one know. Verbatim and TY are better. Ritek are good. Also you can try some generic DVDs.

The best playback discs I've found are Verbatim, Memorex, and Maxell in that order.

i have to say that the last few people to comment were right.
taiyo yuden was supposed to be great so i bought some to test them out.
titanium datawrite were the best, taiyo yuden was not that special, and the ul-tran double sided disc was perfect.
u were right. my dvd player knew what was best and i opened it up and now it plays even those crap hyundai discs!
one thing i would say though is if u want to back up data or film on a quality disc then do go that bit extra for a quality disc that will last a long time but if ur not really bothered and u want something quick and ur not really interested in keeping that data really because dvd will be obsolete in about 10 years then buy any old trash. at your own peril though.
i'll burn avi's and trash to cheap trash and valuable treasurable media to quality dvd discs. like for like
