iam a newbie at this video stuff, bin reading on it for weeks now, think i over read as iam now confused, loking for some input on a few matters.

    1. do you get the same quality from a all in 1 proggy,or should u use diff ones for the diff modes, like capture, edit, author ,so on.

    2. if so,i bin playing with ulead stuidos 9 and pinncal 9. i do have a hard time figuring out the editing part in both, but like uleadstudios a bit better.i use windv to get the vid to the comp from my mini dv unit, works great.

3.if iam right the steps are to capture, edit, then author, correct.

4.to save the avi file form the dv in windv and burn it to a dvd,do you have to convert it over or just burn the avi file to the disk.

It really depends on the programs. Generally an all in 1 program will do a bunch of things adequately while a separate program will do one thing well. But a good all in 1 program is better than several crappy different programs.

    I don't think that was a question.

That would be correct. You have to capture in order to have something to edit and/or author. Editing is really an option step- you can create a DVD without doing any editing if you want.

If you want a DVD that will play in a DVD player then you have to convert it- that's the "authoring" part which converts your files to .vob and .ifo files for the DVD player. If you capture ot avi then you might have to convert that to mpeg before you can author. Many authoring programs will not accept avi files.

You should be able to get close to the same quality as your source (DV). I've never used Ulead but people here have gotten good results with it. There are a lot of programs that are either free or have a free trial. Check the tools to the left. At what point does the quality look bad? If it's the captured file then it's obviously something in the capture process- could be the program, the settings, or something else in the system. If the quality is still good after the capture and then gets worse when you edit or author, then you'd need to look at the editing/authoring programs and processes.
