  1. I am purchasing a 32in Sharp Aquos and currently own a Pioneer DV-333. How can I get the highest resolution out of my dvd's. I've heard about upscaling and getting cables, but what is the best way to go.

If they both have the connectors pictured above (RGB composite), use that. Or if they both have an HDmI connector, use that instead.

There are two issues for advanced DVD display on a HDTV.

A DVD is native 720x480 and can be encoded either 29.97 interlaced or 23.976 progressive (film source). PAL uses 25fps for both.

Progressive DVD players create a 59.94 (50 for PAL) frames per second progressive output to either the analog component or DVI-HDMI digital connectors. For a 32" set, their should be little or no difference in quality on the screen for either connection.

Second issue is resolution. The 32" LCD Sharp Aquos has a progressive 1366 x 768 native resolution. The 480p 720x480 input from the DVD player will be internally scaled to that resolution inside the TV. The picture should be very nice.

A DVD player with internal scaling can do the same thing to 720p (1280x720) and output to the TV at 720p/59.94 fps. The TV will then scale that to 1366 x 768.

Several ways to get the same result.

  4. I'm deciding between these three 32in lcds. The sony looks like it produces the deepest blacks and aruguably has the best picture, but I keep on hearing go with the Aquos. Which one would you go with?

I'd avoid the Sharp with it's 800:1 contrast ratio.

The Samsung looks good with 3,000:1 contrast and 1366x768 native resolution. The Sony contrast spec is missing.

I'd read all the reviews on other issues.

  7. Sony's ratio is 1000:1. Well then that narrows it down to the samsung and the sony. I was told not to go with the sony because its response time is 12ms. However I couldn't find a response time spec anywhere for the Samsung 32in or the Aquos 32in. This is possibly the toughest decision of my life.

Here are Sony's official specs on the KLV-S32A10.

Aquos 32in look ok on good native HD - but anything less including even uprezed dvd dont look so hot-- cable SD looks aweful

anything with a dark background in hd or sd is just a waste

the sony and the sharp look about the same ...

  9. So even if I get HDMI cables or get an upscale converter dvd player your saying it's not going to look good? Maybe I'm just a newb but I'm going to have to call bs on that one. What tv would you suggest I get then, preferably between 32 and 36in? It has to be at best buy too because I work there and am not missing out on the discount. edDV any input?

A 32 " HDTV is going to look about the same no matter how you connect it. The difference is in the display technology. LCD is rapidly getting better and a new model will be much better than a year old design.

Forget HDMI vs. analog component vs upscale/downscale. The overriding issue is how well the display will perform for progressive 480p DVD, 720p, 1080i and standard analog inputs.

Usually a LCD is very good at 480p and 720p, not so good with 1080i, and awful for analog sources.

You need to look at the different models at the local store and make them show you normal analog video inputs. They won't want to. They know what it will look like.
