I used to use Nero 6 but now use version 7 and now when i try and encode two mpeg's (which normally takes up to 4 hours) by using the Nero StartSmart and hangs my whole PC and has to be restarted.
I can use lots of other apps all day and my PC works fine, it's only when I use Nero it hangs.
Any ideas?

I don't know if this will help with the problem that you are having, but you might try doing a complete uninstall of everything Nero on your system first and then install Nero 7. This is a pretty common problem when doing any kind of upgrade. For example, I just ungraded the driver for a Netgear wireless PCMCIA network adapter. I first just installed the new driver over the old one and it didn't work. I then uninstalled the driver and installed the new one and everything then worked fine.
I don't know if you are having a similar problem, but it's worth checking. -
Sorry, should have mentioned in my first post but i downloaded a tool to remove anything Nero and then re-installed Nero 7 but same problem
-
Another thing that is worth checking is your CPU/system temperature. Video processing is very CPU intensive. If your CPU overheats, it will cause the system to lockup. I don't know that is your problem, it is just something that you may want to verify.

There are some other posts around here with similar problems with Nero 7. Keep checking the Nero site as they have promised some fixes.
-
Since Nero 7 isn't available till Nov. 2nd, how can you be using it?

It's available
According to Amazon, since October 9. -
I was having a couple of problems with Nero 6 so upgraded to 7, problems with 7 so downgraded to 6 and still the same problem!
I'll check the Nero site for any related problems.
Anyone recommend anything else to burn some mpeg's onto DVDr's in the meantime? -

Maybe your computer details are the possible answer to your problem.
PIII 600 and 256 Mb RAM running XP, are poor resources to rely on for MPEG conversion. -
I go with Jeremiah58's suggestion.Your PC needs more memory and a faster processor for working with video processing.Video processing uses a lot of your PC's resources. This could be the answer to your problem.
I also find that Nero is full of bugs.~Luke~ -
I know my PC is somewhat slow but i just find it strange that before Nero 7 it was working ok with 6 and now when going back to 6 it still doesn't work. Maybe there are some bits of Nero kicking around that have still got to be rid of?

I have uninstalled all of Nero and gone into regedit and found loads of Nero files in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Should i delete all of these?
-
Be warned that deleting certain registry files can make your computer inoperable. Back up the registry first by using 'Export' under the 'Files' header.
But with that said, you should be able to delete files that only refer to Nero. Regedit also has a find function to locate them.
The proper version of Nero Clean is safer, though. -
I ran the Nero Cleaner but still found loads of Nero files in REGEDIT. Safe to delete anything Nero related then?
-
I only delete nero files under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_, SOFTWARE, AHEAD.
I've never deleted anything from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. -
I downloaded a different version of Nero and tried to encode 3 mpegs and got a bit further this time without hanging and produced an error message which i saved in Text format. According to the error, i encoded for 36 minutes before it error'd. Would posting a part of the error help?
-
I don't think posting the error msg will help. If everything you've done has failed then you probably need to upgrade your pc. A P3 600mhz processor is way too slow for video encoding. I used to use a P3 933mhz processor that took 12 hours to encode with TMPGE PLUS.
-
Sorry, forgot to update my PC details as i have an Athlon something or other but cant remember which one it is.
I just find it strange that it was working all ok just before i upgraded to Nero 7 -
did you actually delete from the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT? if you did that could have complicated things.
-
ehm....as i know, the final version of nero has been released on october 31st. this has a version number 7.0.1.2....earlier versions were pre-final (Beta and RC) versions....but this was not written, that this is demo or something...
i had same problems as you are writting with earlier versions, but final version released only 3 days ago on nero.com web is beautiful.
-
Right, I uninstalled the application a few times and cleaned up my PC, defragged it and re-installed it and tried again and got further this time but received an error message which has been saved into a text file and uploaded here http://rapidshare.de/files/7862269/error_file.txt.html
If someone could take a look and tell me why it has error'd? -
Your link takes us to a file sharing service where you must pay to become a premium member. Could this be where you got Nero from? If so, your files may be corrupted. You can't trust those sites 100%.
It doesn't matter who you vote for. The government always gets in. -
It's a site that hosts files so anyone can download it. What you have to do is select 'free' then download the file
