Making perfect DVDs - Here's the Method !

Let me first say that although I was very active in promoting this "perfect copy" idea (it started when I cam across the Video Stream Subsitute Tool in Rempeg152 - doesn't work well unfortunately) when others where apparently content to make high bitrate SVCDs, NONE of this would have been possible without the TALENT and PERSISTENCE of our friend Derrow. Thanks to him it is now possible to make a virtually perfect copy of ANY DVD and put it on a 4,300mb DVD-R/-RW/+RW.

It's a simple method really and I'll try to make it as short as possible (It was successfully implemented for Gladiator NTSC). If you want to develop a major headache read the thread that showed the "miracle" at work...http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthrea...=&threadid=9432

First a friendly word of advice: you can test the process on the first .vob for instance. To do that simply keep the first main movie .vob in VIDEO_TS and move the other ones somewhere else.

    A) Rip the DVD with your favorite. What you want is to have the exact same contents of VIDEO_TS on your HD as on your DVD.

    B) Merge the main movies .vob's together with Vob File Merger. That will require some space and the use of NTFS as the file system. That means you'll need to be using Win2000 or WinXP (or NT4). If that's not an option, you can make a list of the .vobs readable by Rempeg152. Search for CFFL here: http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthrea...=&threadid=9764

    C) Fire up Rempeg152 (linked from here: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/rempeg2_guide.htm) and open your merged .vobs or list made above. Rempeg will then analyze the video stream and that takes a while. Once it's finished, got to Options. You need to change 3 settings here. First is the "scale factor". This basically reduces the bitrate of the videostream by a % factor. Ideally, you'll find the setting that makes your project reach the size of 4,300mb...(for Gladiator NTSC, it's 58%). Second select the size of your video frames. 352x480 and 720x480 are both NTSC DVD standards (352x576 and 720x576 for PAL), your transcoding will be faster with 352 and depending on the bitrate you end up with, you might get less blocking with 352 at the expense of resolution. I used 352x480 for Gladiator and the quality was fine. Third select "match source".
Now hit encode and save your file as xxx.m2v. The process will take time but Rempeg152 gives you an accurate estimate so you'll know what to expect. Here's the speed you can expect 80ms/picture (12.5fps) with an Athlon 1300 at 352x480, 140ms/picture (7fps) with a Dual Celeron at 550mhz. Speed will decrease by about 40% with a resolution of 720x480

    D) Now to the MAGICAL part...Fire up ifoedit 0.5rev1 (available here http://rilanparty.com/vbb/attachmen...s=&postid=47059 for now, but I'm sure Doom9 will put it uo for download soon). There's a small quirck in that version in that you need to create a c:/temp folder

    1) Open the .ifo of you main movie

    2) Stripping Process:
This is where you would remove unwanted streams from your .vob, i.e. unneeded audio channels like DTS or AC# 2 channel, etc...This will let you maximize the space (and quality) for the video of the main movie. For Gladiator, I ripped the DTS and AC3 2 Channel to get to 4,300mb.

    3) REMPEG Process:
    a) Select Rempeg in the bottow right corner and point it to xxx.m2v(if it says can't create logfile, you didn't create the C:/temp...)
    b) It will prompt you to choose a place (NEW Directory) to save your new .vob's. I'd suggest creating a subdirectory in VIDEO_TS
    c) It will now RECREATE your .vob's using the original .vob's/ifo by substituting the original full bitrate videostream by the x%transcoded xxx.m2v. This will take time !

    4) Correct VOB's Process:
a)BEFORE you star that process, you MUST copy all of the original files from VIDEO_TS (except the main .vob's of course) to the directory where you saved your new .vob's
    b) Open the main .ifo in your NEW directory
    c) Hit Correct .vob's. This will take time !

    5) Recreate Tables Process:
    a) Just hit that button and wait till it's done...
    b) Save you .ifo over the old one in the NEW directory

    6) Get VTS Sectors Process:
    a) Open each .ifo, hit Get VTS Sectors and save it over itself. You must open the VIDEO_TS.IFO last.

    CONGRATULATIONS ! YOU'VE MADE IT !

Now you can burn to a DVD-R/-RW/+RW by using Nero 5.5.x or higher and choosing DVD ROM (UDF/ISO).
Before you do that though, make sure you test your transcoded DVD with a software player like PowerDVD XP or WinDVD. PowerDVD is better because you can play your movie regardless of where it is on your HD. With WinDVD, it has to be in the root of a drive.

    Known Limitations:
    1) Audio Streams - If you keep stream #4 and remove #2 and #3, old #4 will become new #2 and if the DVD is authorized in such a way that it prevents you from selecting the audio stream directly by forcing you to choose it from the menu, then you're out of luck ! The reason being that them menu still thinks it's #4 you're looking for !
Workarounds could be to create dummy streams for those you've removed or removing that stupid limitation preventing you from selecting the audio stream directly !
Derrow is on top of this !

    2) Stuttering in NTSC movies. Gladiator worked fine and it's a pretty typical 97% progressive movie (as shown by DVD2AVI) so since most movies are like that they should work fine. Odd animals like interlaced movies might be a different story as some have experienced some stuttering. That's why I'd recommend leaving the "menu" or "extra material" .vob's intact because that's full of interlaced stuff and it might cause problems

  3. Take a look of these links (From Derrow, the original author of IfoEdit -latest version 0.8 )

You can make an exact copy of DVD-5 and DVD-9 (with the last one kind of dvd you must reencode your vob's)

Full original DVD-menus working with this method!!!

Only one bug: Disney R1 movies with multiangle option (for multi-language purposes) does not work perfectly.
