  1. What's the simplest way to split an AVI file, guys? With a free programme that handles almost any type of file (my TMPGEnc won't handle this file)??
Downloaded a video file that I want to eventually burn, but I have to get it off this old PC I use for the NET first, and its burner is fried, so I need to move the file using a Flash drive... and for that, I need ot split the file into two, each smaller than 4 or 500 Megs... thanks!

Just use Winzip or Winrar and have it span the file into 4 segments, then join them again into one when all the pieces are moved to the other machine.

  3. If I just choose to break it into parts in WinRAR, will it automatically create 2 (or more) parts and name them in sequencial order?
    Thnx

...or use VirtualDub to actually split the AVI in 2 (or more) segments.

  5. Dabbled with VirtualDub, but haven't gotten crazy with it yet....

It says it needs a codec, tho

Yes, just like (almost) every app that deals with compressed video.

  8. Well, I'm not sure what codec I'm missing in order to split the file in, say, TMPGEnc, unless someone can clue me in to whatever might be the most obvious culprit...

...HOWEVER, I DO have Nero... but have used it only for basic burning. Can I split the file into two (to make the whole avi on 'parts 1-2' VCDs) using Nero? If so, how?

  9. Well, strangely I can get neither TMPGEnc nor VirtualDub to open/split the file, saying they're missing a codec. I can PLAY the file on my PC, and gspot says that I have the neccessary codecs to do so.
So what am I missing? What does either TMPGEnc or Virtualdub need so that I can split this file and get nero to burn the mother?
Thnx all who've replied so far, and those who will. Much appreciated.

I think we're at a stage where we really need to see what GSpot is telling you about the file, and the error messages both TMPGEnc and Virtualdub are giving you - otherwise we're just stabbing in the dark.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  11. I remember there is a shareware named "quick AVI splitter", google it.

  12. Well, I'll look for quick avi splitter...

In the meantime, gspot says: "2 compatible codecs installed" on video and 3 on audio, that I have 'Microsoft MPEG-4 video decomressor and MPEG Decoder DMO' and that DirectShow claims to be able to play the file.
When I try to open the same file in TMPGEnc, it says that the file cannot open or is unsupported.
VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1 says: couldn't locate decompressor for format MP42 (Microsoft Highspeed MPEG-4 v.2). Directshow codecs are not suitable. Only 'Direct Stream Copy' is available for this video.

for your situation, I would highly reommend you follow the winrar split-file suggestion. it will do the job MUCH easier and faster.

that is unless you already got the file moved.
