Sounds like overheating. Shrinking and encoding is very CPU intensive. Clean out your CPU fan & heat sink. Overclocking?

Isn't a program like motherboard monitor freeware?

you can check your computer temps while processing I think and it also does other stuff like voltages etc doesn't it?

MBM5 is a nice piece of software. However all monitors are only as accurate as the information they can collect. Most motherboard sensors can be out by as much as 20%. Not all boards report all possible data items.

    Definately worth a look though.

  6. Think long and hard about what changed on your PC, "about a month ago." ANY new software, hardware, updates, move the box, ANYHING AT ALL. A new screensaver could do it. Antivirus update could do it.

Also try a different ripping prog. Corrupted file could be the cause, same symptoms on a completely different prog would eliminate this. Note that a simple update of same software may, or may not, overwrite existing progam files, making it an uncertain solution. If the update fixes it, then that's the problem. If the update does NOT work, then you don't know if it overwrote ALL the pre-existing files. A different prog eliminates this possibility.

If you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that nothing has changed, that would indicate some sort of component failure. Take the case cover off, check fans and ensure adequate cooling. Leave the cover off and test. Check your harddrive thoroughly for errors, several runs of Scandisk and Defrag should be sufficient. New power supply is cheap and easy to replace. After that, things start getting more expensive and difficult.

    Isolate and Identify.

Woops. Just noticed you can copy from a copy. That alone eliminates most hardware issues, process is almost identical in terms of hardware. Are the original DVDs that fail the SAME ones that worked previously, or are they different? By same, I mean the actual disk that you were able to copy before, not the same title.

If the SAME DISK that you could copy before, does not work now, but the backup can be copied, that points a strong finger at the software. Though there is a difference in reading a burnt disk and a pressed one, in terms of the DVD drive itself. Can you simply play, all the way through, on the PC, a pressed disk that you cannot copy? Are the disks clean, not scratched, no fingerprints?
