All DVD players will player double layer DVD-ROMs.

If you are talking abot double layer recordable DVDs, then go here: <https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers>, check the DVD+R DL and/or DVD-R DL boxes and find out. It's certainly limited, with DVD+R DL anecdotally working more often.

It does. The only consistently reliable DL recordable DVD media is that by Verbatim. And, anecdotally, the DVD+R DL seems to work better.

I hear you. I really have little use for them at their current cost and compatibility level.

Luckily enough, the cost on these things have dropped pretty rapidly since they were introduced and can be found for ~$2.00 each during sales. When/if they drop to the cost of a couple blank DVDs (just under $1.00) on an everyday basis, then things will become more interesting.

  6. not sure if this is a valid point, but does your burner support bitsetting? maybe it doesn't recognize the media type. I burn all my discs with the bitsetting set to dvd-rom, lets my xbox play 'em anyways. My philips dvp642 doesn't seem to care about the bitsetting.
