At what step did the sound disappear? You can check the file as you go through the process of DVD creation. If you are going from DV to DVD, it's pretty straightforward if you followed the steps.
That guide gives you MPEG-1, Layer 2 audio. You can get a little more video bitrate by using AC3 audio as it makes a more compact audio file. ffmpeggui is one easy way to convert to AC3.
If you want to try a easier method at lesser quality, use DivxToDVD. There is still a freeware version available. Just drop the DV file into it and let it run.
