  1. I am presently using a Pioneer DVR-A05 (105) burner with the 1.33 firmware upgrade installed. I have always used 4x discs but now have a batch of TY 8x discs. There is a warning on the TY packaging about using 8x discs in a 4x burner. Am I going to have to do anything special or just burn the new discs at 4x?

Assuming firmware 1.33 has a write strategy for TYG02, you should be fine.

  3. How would I know if the write strategy is in the firmware other than trying the discs?

  4. I upgraded my DVR-105 to firmware 1.33 hacked from Gradius because I needed an increased read speed.
Before the upgrade I had some problems with Verbatim 8x.
I don't have anymore that kind of disc but now I'm using TDK 8x and they work perfectly, so i can't say for sure if the problem was the media or the firmware.
I can't check now the media ID of those TDK but are the ones commonly sold everywhere (at least here in Italy).
If you need it, i can check it ASAP.
    Hope it helps

Unfortunately the changelog for 1.33 doesn't mention any specific media codes, but as it mentions improving reading DVD-RDL media, I'd imagine there is at least TYG02 write support. I'd be pretty dumb to add reading support for -RDL but not a 4x TYG02 writing strategy...
