From what I know, technically Karaoke is simple a mpeg file
What makes it karaoke, is the audio (it has no lyrics, only music) and the pumping / animation like subtitles (which could be part of the movie)

There is VCD Karaoke discs, SVCD ones, I saw a couple of CVDs online and -of course - DVD Karaoke discs.

I think there is a special way to author a VCD so to make it karaoke. But VCD 2.0 include those specifications (VCD browsing)

Take a look at my music video guide , adding the lyrics so they appear shouldnt be hard ... just takes a long time too get it right ...

1: as subtitle , easiest to time and setup .
2: each part of lyric is seperate image muxed in correct order , but takes a very long time , and correcting timings means that part of project needs to be completely remuxed with correct frame timings .
