I have this movie in vob format which is 3gb long but it only has 1 chapter is this normal as most I use on dvdauthor have more than 1 chapter, how do i add more

VOBs don't have chapters. Video DVD do.
(The chapter point info is in the ifo file)
A VOB is just a piece of a Video DVD taken out of its context.
Use the VOB as source material when you author (some apps like TDA can use VOB as source) and add your chapter points.

I do click on the video_ts folder when i author with dvdauthor but there is only 1 chapter surely there should be more the movies is 3gb

you could demux the video/audio and then rebuild it with DVDAuthor and get that to create chapters I think

I used GUI for dvdauthor in the past and I think that also creates chapters

Que? "click on the video_ts folder when i author"? I never see the video_ts folder until authoring is finished, and even then, clicking the folder doesn't show me any chapters. Playing the DVD in a player might do, if there are any, but I can well imagine authoring a 3 GB video (not that there is any relation between VOB size and # of chapter points) without chapters. I rarely jump between chapter, but watch the whole movie from start to end. YMMV
