    Greetings! I appologize if this is in the wrong forum. Anyway, here's the gist of it:

    I have ripped one of my DVDs to AVI. It's XviD encoded with AC3 audio. The initial purpose was for streaming to my Avel Linkserver. Therefore, the AC3 audio track would still give me surround sound. This works just fine.

    However, I now want to play these previously ripped files on my Archos AV500. It can play the XviD, but not the AC3 track.

    Now that I've bored you:
    How do I start with an XviD/AC3, and end up with an XviD/MP3?

    I've tried the following:
    Simply use PocketDivXEncoder to convert to a MP4 SP with what I assume is an MP3 track. This is okay, but the video doesn't look as good.

    I've also tried a very convoluted conversion process, starting with demultiplexing in VirtualDub, and converting the resulting WAV with HeadAC3he or BeSweet. All this did was create a WAV file that I didn't know what to do with, and a video file that was estimated at 36GB.

    So what's the quickest way to do this? Any ideas?

  2. Hi-

    I didn't understand all of that, but why can't you just extract the AC3 and convert that directly to MP3 using BeSweet or HeadAC3he? Then remux, replacing the AC3 with the MP3. And to keep your video from balooning in size, set Video to Direct Stream Copy.

    1. Open the avi with ac3 in goldwave and save as mp3 or as manono says, extract the ac3 and convert it with besweet,belight,HeadAC3he.
    2. Open the avi with ac3 in virtualdubmod, select Streams->Stream list and delete the ac3 and add the mp3.
    3. Select video->direct stream copy.
    4. File->Save as avi.

    You could even just do it all in virtualdubmod, provided you have an AC3 decoder (AC3 ACM Decompressor) and an MP3 codec (Lame MP3) installed.

    Open your AVI, go to Video > Direct Stream Copy, then go to Streams > Stream List, right-click on your audio stream and go to Full Processing. Right-click on your audio stream again and go to compression, select your MP3 codec and a suitable bitrate. OK your way out then go to File > Save as AVI.
    If in doubt, Google it.
