I was looking into some of the intel chips and wondered what the difference is in the two types. I want a 3.4 chip but there is a lga775 and a 478. Besides the $100 difference. What would be the chip differences.? Thanx All

It's the type of socket. 775 is the newer ones that go with boards that support PCI-E graphics. 478 is the older boards with the Intel 8xx chipsets. So I guess it would depend on which kind of board you want to get for it to decide which socket CPU to purchase. Not much difference between 775 and 478 as long as you're comparing the same cores (Prescott 3.4 with the same amounts of on-die cache).

  3. I think Intel is going to lose market share to AMD just becuase they totally screwed up on the naming scheme.....6 or 7 different chips....give me a break. Then add the Mobile series and the Cerlons....

They average Joe has no idea what to get now

OH, now through in the Dual core chips too

I totally agree, the new naming scheme is really stupid. At least get the clock speed in there as part of the name, like the first number be the series chip and the last two the clock. I guess almost like the BMW naming schema. So if it were a 634 processor it would be a Pentium D at 3.4 GHz. But no, we're forced to memorize almost the whole lineup in order to know what's what.

However the dual-core Pentiums are still called Pentium Ds so you have that at least to tell them apart. However a Celeron D is not a dual-core Celeron so there's a little confusion there too

I also notice that the 478 is not 64bit and the 775 chips are. Another question with this make a difference with the new windows vitsa os.
