I have a .mpg file that I want to play in QuickTime and/or import to Imovie (the file plays fine in VLC media player), when I play in QT I see the first frame and I hear the audio. I have d-loaded the MPEG-2 Playback Component from apple, and still nothing.

I am assuming this is happening because I am missing the right codec, does anyone know of any codec's I should get, I already have divx.

Open the file in Quicktime again.
    DO NOT PLAY.
Once open in Quicktime, go to
    Window-->Get Info.
Post back what it says VERBATIM
here on the site and we can help you out.

Since this is looking like that they used a weird codec
in recording it to MPEG, without demuxing it
you won't know what CODEC you need.

download ( if you already don't have it) FFMPEGX
and after getting it installed, drag and drop the MPEG
file on fmpegx's Summary window, and
it should break down what the VIDEO codec should be.

  6. You might also try MPEG Streamclip. It's extremely easy to use, very fast, free, and even lets you edit the MPEG before output.

For editing in iMovie, MPEG Streamclip can output straight to DV format without losing audio like QT Pro does with MPEG-2 (assuming it can open the file in the first place).

It also corrects the weirdness in downloaded ReplayTV files, so they burn with proper audio sync to DVD. It just seems to do everything right, which is a godsend with all of these different formats and data rates. The developer deserves a pile of good karma.

His major Problem though, is that the Quicktime MPEG-2
component, which MPEG Streamclip is also dependent on,
cannot parse the video. This makes MPEG Streamclip
    worthless.

Your best bet is still to get ffmpegx, and at this point,
follow my suggestions to determine the underlying
video codec used to encode the video to MPEG-2.
Since ffmpegx IS NOT dependent on any Quicktime
architecture, it should be able to crack it.

  8. Ah, ok. I thought it was above the MPEG-2 Component, since it is able to do things which QT Pro cannot with MPEG-2 files.

it would be nice if the makers of Streamclip could somehow
incorporate mjpeg technology, or mpeg2enc, like ffmpegx into their software.
Open source may help them break their QT dependency!

oh, Kernel, btw, welcome to our corner of the world!

    Like your site btw...

  10. Thanks!

It would be nice if development on Streamclip does continue in every way. It really saved my sanity with ReplayTV files, which I'm also using to archive old VHS tapes. Ultra convenient all around now. (RTVToolkit worked fine in OS X, but required a lot more effort.) Hence, I always try it first.
