This new x264 seems to be going to be the next standard for compressed video. I take it this will render the dvd divx compatible players useless unless we reencode the files in xvid or divx?

x264 is just one implimentation of the AVC/h.264 standard. Just like regular DVD players, I can't really see them becoming useless any time soon.
