I just ordered a black Samsung TS-H552U DVD burner. According to the DVD-Writer section on this site, it has a Mediatek chipset.

Does anyone have experience with this drive or ones like it and can tell me if this drive "prefers" DVD+Rs or DVD-Rs?

By prefers I mean burns better.

Check the list for DVD writers. There is usually a list of media that people ave used and their experiences with that media. That would be the best place to look.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

I just purchased two of these drives from tigerdirect. I also have one from a previous purchase. The DVD-r media burns slightly faster then the DVD+r media. Both media work fine. In order to burn at 16x I had to use the liveupdate for the previous and I'd imagine it's going to be the same for these two. It's a very quiet and extremely quick DVD writer. The latest firmware also allows the drive to burn DVD-R DL as well as the DVD+R DL.

A very fine drive at an extremely affordable price.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

Tidy: I've looked at the list several times and the user comments were insufficient to be useful.

ROF: I'm currently leaning towards gettings +R because the Samsung has the same chipset as other drives that I have read prefer +R. Have you ever gotten coasters or bad burns with +Rs? Were they more excessive than -Rs?

  6. LiteOns use Mediatek chipsets & the consensus is that they prefer DVD+R media. I have a LiteOn, and I use DVD+R exclusively, because it burns every brand DVD+R flawlessly. That being said, if you use high-quality DVD-R media (TYG02, MXL RG02, MCC 02RG20), I suspect it will perform well.

+R it is then. Just ordered a bunch of MCC +R Verbatim OEM media. Thanks Shocker!
