I just picked-up one of these at a good price. When I play back a regular VHS tape (not SVHS), there is no output on the S video, just the composite video. Is it possible to get an output on the S video? If so, would the signal be better?

I played-back one older tape (not great condition) where there is waiving/bending at the top if digital TBC/NR is on, but this seems to go away if it is off. Can anyone comment on this?

That sounds odd. The S-Video Out and the Composite Out should both be active. Can you get S-Video Out under any conditions?

It might be that your TV or Monitor needs to be setup to accept S-Video instead of Composite. Sometimes one input will take priority over the other just by plugging in its cable. Try connecting only the S-Video cable to your display...

  3. I believe you might have to go into the VCR set-up to enable it. I bought one of these machines but didn't like it, think I'll send it to Lordsmurf and keep my Mitsubishi U80 .

That's true for selecting between an S-Video or Composite input, but both outputs are active simultaneously.

What didn't you like about the 9911?

The flagging at the top can still occur with some tapes. I've found (through LordSmurf's reviews) that the Panasonic DMR-ES10 does a Fantastic job at clearing 99% of my flagging issues. The Pany is used as a pass through, with the JVC TBC turned off.

Of course, then you'd have to buy a DataVideo TBC-1000 to give you a clean signal to your capture device. I didn't buy all of these at once, but I've found them, over time, to be necessities for my set-up.

S-Video is traditionally a better signal, however, if you are dealing with old tapes with lots of noise, you can instead run it through your composite cable and "soften" it a little bit.
