  1. Hi, is there software that will allow me to change a region 2 DVD to region 1 (when I make a copy)?

My DVD recorder isn't "hackable" and I have some region 2 (& 4) DVD's I want to watch on my region 1 player and copying them didn't change the regions when I test ripped them.

Any help on this would be appreciated as I don't know where else to try on this (as I assume it's not as simple as changing the PAL to NTSC broadcast signal like in the VHS days...). Thanks in advance.

  2. Are you sure, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink both do what you want, You do need to set it up as I recall it.

If they are PAL and you have a NTSC player they may not work. My Sony always throws up a message and then goes to the next disk.

Rather than changing to Region 1, why not just leave them as Region-Free.

Sorry, meant to say I would've done this but couldn't find the option to do so.

I'll look in to Decrypter & Shrink though, thanks.

All you have to do is rip them to your HDD with DVD Decrypter, burn them back to a dvdr and they will be region free, or more acuratley, all region's encoded.

If they are dvd9's then you obviously must use something like DVD Shrink 3.2 to make them fit a dvdr, depending on if you want everything or just the movie.
As long as your dvd player will play PAL format, which region 2 & 4 dvd's are usually in PAL.

My TV DVD player is NTSC, that's why I want to change the disc from PAL (region 2) to NTSC equiv (region free). Thanks for the tips anyways, I'll try Decrypter if IFOEdit doesn't work though.

One thing you need to understand is that region code and NTSC/PAL are two completely independant things. If you change the Region from 2 to Region 1, it will still be Region 1 PAL. You will need to convert the DVD to NTSC if your dvd player or tv cant handle PAL.

There are some guides on this forum, do a search for conversion.

    What waheed said.

Changing the region code on a disc has nothing to do with what format the dvd video is in.

What dvd player are you trying to play them on ?
Alot of players will play pal dvd's as long as they are region free, so to speak.

Do you mean your "dvd burner" ? or do you want to play them on your standalone dvd recorder ?

You need to be more specific in a subject that has a thousand variables

I agree, I tried the IFO Edit patch method and it didn't work.

When I say "DVD burner" I mean the drive in my computer.

When I say "DVD recorder", I mean my stand alone DVD player/recorder that is hooked to my TV.

Both handle all the various DVD+&-R/RW DL etc.

I am in the continental US. I got some DVD's from the UK & Australia which do play on my DVD BURNER, I want to get them to play on my DVD RECORDER. Fair enough?

Is Decrypter or Shrink (or something else) my next best bet? I will search the guides on this site but being a newbie, I'm not sure which one is best for me since these are my first "experiments", and hence why I post in the newbie forum.

Looking forward to the replies while I do my research though, thanks in advance.

Here's a link to some PAL-NTSC guides. It is not the simplist conversion, but just look upon it as a challange and don't get too frustrated.

Okay, i was not sure because you said your "Recorder" was not hackable but you wanted to watch them on your region 1 "Player"

On a PC it's usually no problem playing import - PAL format dvd's, and if you copy them to dvdr you dont have to be able to hack your player for region because the dvdr will be all region encoded (region free, region 0) but because the video is still in the pal format your player must be able to play pal format. As redwudz stated, it's not the easiest conversion and can be time consuming, very technical, and usually only the movie and or extras can be done, the menus are more work than they are worth. I usually just make my own custom motion menus for my pal to ntsc conversions.

I have done many many conversions but most people advise to and just buy a standalone player that will play imports or at least convert pal to ntsc as they are very cheap to get. one of the more popular ones is the Cyberhome CH-DVD 300, i bought one for my daughter almost 2 years ago for x-mas and it still works great, and just picked one up last month as a replacement for my son's old one, bought it at best buy on sale with a rebate and got it for $26.00.

  13. Pretty much what I do also, I play them on a player that Plays PAL or NTSC and can be set to only output NTSC. Then I feed them into a DVD recorder if I want a NTSC copy for later viewing in my changer. If not then I just play them in my player(s). I have to Apex units that can play PAl and display properly on a NTSC TV. My Recorder will play them but I haven't found a way to get it to not output as PAL in which case it is b&W and distorted on my TV.

If you have a really good computer you can go the encoding route. On my 3Ghz computer I can do one disk overnight (episodic disks) and then next evening I author and burn. So for me the play in the apex and record in real time is much easier and speedier.

    Good Luck

well not prob., if you look you did :P

Hope you get it good!!! A dvd player that will convert is the easiest way to go and for as cheap as you can get them... you can't go wrong!!! I just do conversions so when i go to friends houses that like the same stuff, but have dvd players that won't convert PAL to NTSC, we can watch movies that you can't get here plus at home i can keep the originals safe so my kids don't trash them because my son loves alot of the stuff i get from overseas before it's released here, if it ever is.... 8) but i kind of nipped that one as i bought him one now that converts so i can just do a 1:1 backup without the hassle of converting it from PAL to NTSC on one of my PC's
